Introduction to Manufacturing: Pilot Program Creates Pathways into Industry. The future of Queensland’s manufacturing sector depends on building a skilled, confident workforce and that’s exactly what the Introduction to Manufacturing Pilot Program in Cairns set out to achieve.
Delivered in collaboration with the Queensland Manufacturing Hub, Cairns and Major Training Group, the program was designed to provide job seekers with an introduction to the manufacturing industry, along with practical skills they could take directly into the workplace.
Program Highlights
Over the program, participants gained hands-on training and exposure to key skills, including:
Working safely and following WHS policies and procedures
Carrying out measurements and calculations
Cutting, welding, and bending materials
Reading and interpreting plans and job specifications
Complying with site work processes and procedures
To set participants up for success, the program also included:
Four days of work experience across two local manufacturing employers
All required PPE supplied (eye and ear protection, gloves)
At the end of the program, participants were awarded a Statement of Attendance, recognising their commitment to gaining foundational industry skills.
“The Queensland Manufacturing Hub identified the need, and Major Training Group were fantastic partners,” said Sandra, Principal Capability Development Officer. “They supported the program, worked with the budget, and kept the focus on getting participants skilled and ready for employment.”
Strong Outcomes for Participants
Of the five participants who took part in the pilot program, two have already been offered casual Trade Assistant positions following their work experience placements.
The employer feedback was immediate and positive. “Yvan and Bisheko did an amazing job and left a great impression on the team,” Norweld shared. The program’s impact was so immediate that both participants secured roles shortly after their work experience, with Norweld praising them as punctual and hard-working members of the team.
One of the most rewarding moments came when Bisheko returned to the Major Training office, proudly wearing his new Norweld uniform as he shared the news of his new role, a true example of training leading directly to opportunity
The program’s impact was so significant that Bisheko initially accepted another role before his interview with Norweld could even be scheduled. In a fortunate turn of events, his circumstances changed, and Norweld was thrilled to welcome him aboard as well. Both are now valued members of the Norweld team, praised for being punctual and hard-working.
Building Futures Through Collaboration
This success would not be possible without the collaboration between the Queensland Manufacturing Hub and industry partners like Norweld, who are committed to creating real opportunities for local job seekers.
The collaboration between the Cairns Manufacturing Hub and industry partners like Norweld demonstrates how targeted initiatives can bridge the gap between people seeking work and employers looking for skilled, work-ready candidates. The future of the program looks bright, with plans to involve more community groups and continue building a stronger, more diverse manufacturing workforce in Far North Queensland.
