Mike Krzyzewski who likes to go by ‘Coach K’, coached Duke University’s Men’s basketball program for 42 years. He won five national championships, two Olympic gold medals and became the most successful coach in the history of US College Basketball.

He coached some of the greatest players ever to take the court like Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, and a dynasty of Duke stars.

Then in his last game, he lost. That’s the thing about coaching. It doesn’t end perfectly. It just ends and what you built along the way is what matters.

Episode two of Major Convos is built around a leadership retreat Matthew attended in North Carolina. It was an intimate event at Duke University that brought together some of the biggest names in sport and business. Matthew brings the stories back to Corey and the Major Convos audience and the lessons translate far beyond the basketball court.

Learning is leverage

Hosted by entrepreneur Jesse Itzler at Duke University in North Carolina, the retreat was intimate by design, fewer than 50 people in the room, which meant real access to some extraordinary voices.

The lineup included retired Duke University basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski (Coach K), Tom Brady and college football coach Kirby Scott.

Matthew went in without expectations and came back with a notebook full of insights that are just as relevant to an RTO leader as they are to a championship basketball coach.

Coach K and the two principles that built a dynasty

Coach K had two principles: tell the truth and look people in the eye when you do it. Culture, trust, accountability and legacy flowed from those two things.

He also talked about what he called “speed to trust.” The faster a leader can build genuine trust with their people, the further ahead they’ll be. For Coach K that meant getting to know his players deeply, their backgrounds, their values, their motivations. He was known to get on a plane and fly home with a recruit just to understand where they came from. That’s how seriously he took it.

He didn’t miss the coaching when he retired but he missed the relationships.

Tom Brady on love, fear and respect

Tom Brady brought a different flavour to the room. His take on leadership came down to three modes: loved, feared, and respected. Most leaders default to one. Brady’s view is that the great ones operate across all three and more importantly, they know which leadership stye to apply to each team member.

Some players needed a challenge to perform. Others needed encouragement. Others responded to being compared to a competitor. Brady knew which lever to pull for each person and he pulled it deliberately.

He also shared a story about a horse that kept finishing second. His answer? Get it into a race it can win so it knows what winning feels like. The principle carries. If your team hasn’t seen what a win looks like, part of your job as a leader is to create the conditions so your team can experience their first win.

Culture is not transferrable

One of the clearest messages from the retreat is that you can’t take a winning culture from one place and drop it into another and expect it to land.

When Coach K coached the US Men’s Basketball team, he couldn’t just import Duke’s culture. He had to start from scratch, adapting a different environment, with new players and higher expectations.

Matthew acknowledged this directly. Bringing Churchill Education into the Major Training Group has been a process of navigating two different cultures, neither wrong, just different. The job isn’t to change things too fast. It’s to take people on the journey and build something authentic together.

The takeaways

Matthew pulled it together at the end of the episode with a clear summary of what came through across every speaker. Know your people. Set clear standards and make sure the people understand what they actually mean. Have real conversations. Make eye contact. Be consistent and don’t copy someone else’s culture. Build your own, in your own voice, over time.
