What Can You Do with an MC Licence?

MC Licence Vehicles

An MAn MC licence permits you to drive any Heavy Rigid unit towing 2 or more trailers unit towing two or more trailers, each with a gross vehicle mass exceeding 9,000 kg. This means you’ll have the chance to drive B doubles and road trains, the largest trucks on Australian roads.

Operating such a heavy vehicle requires a range of advanced driving skills, including:

  • The ability to control the combined length of two or more trailers
  • Predicting how the gross weight of the vehicle will track on corners
  • Acceleration
  • Braking
  • Steering.

You’ll need to demonstrate your competency in these areas to pass your MC licence test.  


MC Licence Prerequisites  

You’ll need to meet certain conditions before applying for an MC licence. The Department of Transport and Main Roads won’t issue you with an MC licence until you’ve held a Heavy Rigid or Heavy Combination licence for at least 12 months.

In Australia, licence classes are ranked according to vehicle size. The MC licence is at the very top of the list, meaning you can drive all vehicle types with this licence (barring a motorbike).

You can start learning how to drive MC vehicles once you’ve earned your HR or HC licence. However, you’ll need to be accompanied by a supervisor.  

MC Licence Test 

Passing your MC truck licence test involves two important steps. Firstly, you’ll need to complete a written heavy vehicle knowledge test & pass a practical test with a Registered Training Organisation. Secondly, once you’ve completed this process, you’ll be able to take your documentation to QLD transport & then you are ready to hit the road.
