OVERVIEW
The Certificate IV in Engineering from Major Training is designed for Higher Engineering Tradespersons or Special Class Engineering Tradespersons with Level II in Mechanical, Electrical/Electronic or Fabrication trade disciplines, including: Sheet Metal Workers, Diesel Fitters, Welders, Mechanics, Auto Mechanics, and Boilermakers.
Our engineering apprenticeship is suited to tradespeople looking to take on more advanced technical responsibilities and contribute to complex engineering projects. It can support progression into roles that involve reading and interpreting technical information, applying specialised engineering knowledge, and solving problems across a range of workplace settings.
Course Details
The qualification outcome has been written to allow the learner to gain skills and knowledge from both the daily learning in the workplace and support from a trainer on the underpinning knowledge questions asked in a formal environment, whilst allowing for the flexibility of day-to-day business needs. As part of the recruitment process, it may also recognise the skills and knowledge of a learner’s previous history, further streamlining the qualification, should the learner have the evidence that they already have the skills and abilities in parts of the whole qualification.
The job role involves putting into practice additional skills in the learner’s trade (apprentices who came from fabrication engineering or mechanical engineering, for instance) or cross-skills from other industries. The learner may be involved in the design, manufacture, installation or modification of sheet steel and structures or the installation and repair of plants.
To financially assist would-be engineering apprentices in their training, government-subsidised funding frameworks and school-based apprenticeships are available across Queensland and New South Wales. Programs like Career Start, Career Boost, and VETiS significantly reduce or entirely eliminate the out-of-pocket tuition fees associated with vocational education.

Career Start Program – Free Apprenticeships for under 25’s Initiative
Eligibility
To be eligible for the Free Apprenticeships for Under 25s program you must:
- Be aged under 25 years prior to entering into a training contract (commencing or recommencing) for this qualification.
- Are currently employed as a Queensland apprentice (under a registered training contract) in an eligible apprenticeship qualification through this Program, such as this qualification.
- Be no longer enrolled at school.
- Commence or recommence this apprenticeship between 1 July 2025 and 30 June 2027.
- Not currently enrolled in a qualification.
- Not exceed a maximum of two government-funded apprenticeships or traineeships within a 10-year period.
An engineering apprenticeship may also be funded by the EAT program if eligible (selected regions in NSW). Qualified participants in NSW can receive financial assistance to cover the costs associated with their training, allowing them to shift their focus fully toward their professional development.

While there are no formal entry requirements for the Engineering Apprenticeship, for an apprentice pathway, the learner must be employed full-time or part-time and have access to a workplace. This ensures they can gain sufficient experience to successfully complete the unit of competency requirements.

An apprenticeship combines paid work with structured training, allowing individuals to gain a nationally recognised qualification while gaining practical, on-the-job experience. A Training Contract between the apprentice and employer must be in place for the apprenticeship to proceed.

This qualification may be accessed by direct entry. While there is no qualification entry requirement, it is assumed that the learner is either already a tradesperson with access to structured on and off-the-job training or is an apprentice under an Australian Apprenticeship arrangement.
