What do I study to become a mechanic?
To become an auto mechanic in Australia, you’ll need at least passing grades in school for maths and English, as they’re required for basic certifications and diplomas in mechanical engineering. To get fully qualified and work as a mechanic, you’ll need your mechanic’s licence, which you can obtain by completing relevant courses from a Registered Training Provider (RTO) like Major Training.
Is 27 too old to become a mechanic?
Definitely not. Many mechanics start out or make a career switch in their late 20s and 30s, and we offer several mature-age apprenticeships for mechanics. In fact, being 27 may actually benefit you, as mature-age apprentices are paid more than younger apprentices, as per government-mandated hourly wages related to age.
How much does a mechanic earn in Queensland?
Junior mechanics in Queensland can earn around $70,000 to $80,000 in entry-level jobs. With more qualifications, that figure gets higher. For example, if you complete your Cert 3 in Automotive Sales or specialist Machinery Control Training, you may take on extra responsibilities and more senior job roles, which come with higher salaries of $100,000 and up.
What’s the easiest mechanic certification to get?
The base level mechanic qualification is the Certificate II in Automotive Servicing Technology (AUR20520), which only requires a basic level of English and maths to enter. From there, you can build your qualifications with more advanced certificates, such as the Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology (AUR30620).
