What qualifications do I need to operate plant machinery in QLD?
Anyone wanting to operate plant machinery in Queensland needs a relevant high-risk work (HRW) licence. You must complete your training with a registered training provider (RTO) like Major Training, then apply for your licence through SafeWork QLD.
The specific HRW licence you need will depend on what type of equipment you want to operate: an excavator licence for excavators, a grader ticket for graders, a forklift licence for forklifts… You get the picture.
Will my QLD machinery qualification be recognised in another state?
Yes, even though you complete your plant machinery course in Queensland, your qualification will be recognised and valid in any other Australian state – and abroad. This is often a concern for construction workers who move from project to project, following work between states. But don’t worry, as we are a registered training organisation, your qualification remains legit in every state.
How long do plant machinery courses take?
Most plant machinery training is done in short courses, lasting between 1-5 days. This goes for things like specific machinery training (excavators, forklifts, dump trucks, etc), as well as for refresher courses and verification of competency courses. More advanced training can take weeks or months, and apprenticeships last 2-4 years.
What’s the easiest plant machinery qualification to get?
The first and most straightforward qualification all plant machinery operators need to get is their construction white card. It teaches basic construction skills and knowledge and is a legal requirement for pretty much all tradespeople, from builders to electricians to crane drivers. You can complete your white card with Major Training.
Do I need prior experience to enrol in a plant machinery course?
That depends on the course. Specific tickets, such as the forklift licence or excavator ticket, require a valid white card and foundational construction experience, but junior and entry-level workers can usually enrol. More advanced courses, like the plant operator licence or Cert 3 qualifications, require at least level 2 training in a relevant course.
