Course, Funding & Enrollment FAQs
Find quick answers about courses, funding options, schedules, certifications, and student support services at Major
How do I know which course is right for me?
It depends on the job or industry you're aiming for. If you already have a role in mind, the course usually follows from the licence or qualification that role requires. If you're less sure, our team can talk it through with you and point you to the right starting point. Call us on 1300 790 822 or email info@major.edu.au and we'll help you work it out.
Are Major Training's qualifications accepted by employers across Australia?
Yes. Major Training is a Registered Training Organisation, so the qualifications and statements of attainment we issue are nationally recognised and accepted by employers anywhere in Australia.
What's the difference between a plant operator ticket and a high-risk work licence, and which one do I need?
A high-risk work licence is a legal requirement set by the work health and safety regulator for certain equipment, such as cranes, forklifts and elevating work platforms. A plant operator ticket covers machinery that doesn't fall under the licensing system, like excavators, dozers and rollers, and proves you've been trained and assessed as competent. Which one you need comes down to the specific machine you'll be operating. Tell us the equipment on 1300 790 822 and we'll confirm what's required.
Can I study part-time or while working?
Many of our courses are built around people who are already working. Short courses and high-risk licences run over one or a few days, and apprenticeships and traineeships are designed to be completed on the job. The right format depends on the course, so check the course page or ask our team.
What are the entry requirements for the courses?
Entry requirements vary by course. Some short courses have none beyond being old enough to work on site, while others need a certain level of literacy, a current licence, or prior experience. Each course page lists what's required, and we'll confirm your eligibility when you enrol.
Can I enrol in more than one course at a time?
Yes, you can. Plenty of students stack several short courses or licences together, and our team can help you sequence them so the dates work.
What does a typical training day look like?
Most practical courses mix classroom theory with hands-on time on the equipment. You'll usually cover the safety and operational knowledge first, then move into supervised practical work and assessment. Start and finish times, breaks and what to bring are confirmed before your course begins.
Will I receive a statement of attainment upon completing my course, and how long does it take to be issued?
Yes. Once you've been assessed as competent and any paperwork is finalised, we issue a nationally recognised statement of attainment or certificate. Processing times vary, so ask our team for the current turnaround when you enrol.
Do you offer any courses entirely online?
Some of our courses have online or blended delivery options, particularly theory-based ones. Practical courses and high-risk licences always include a face-to-face component because the assessment has to be done on real equipment. Check the course page or ask us which mode applies.
What happens if I don't pass an assessment (re-sits and additional costs)?
If you're not assessed as competent the first time, you'll usually be given feedback and a chance to be reassessed. Whether a re-sit carries an extra cost depends on the course. Our team can explain the reassessment process and any fees before you enrol.
What's the difference between an apprenticeship and a traineeship?
An apprenticeship trains you in a skilled trade, such as carpentry or electrical work, and usually runs for three to four years. A traineeship covers a broader range of occupations, often in areas like business or transport, and is generally shorter. Both combine paid work with structured training.
Do I need a job before I can start an apprenticeship or traineeship?
Usually, yes. An apprenticeship or traineeship is a formal arrangement between you and an employer, so you need that employment in place first. If you're still looking, a group training organisation or employment service can help connect you with a host employer.
How long does an apprenticeship usually take to complete?
Most apprenticeships take three to four years, though the exact length depends on the trade and how quickly you progress. Some can finish sooner if you already have relevant skills that can be formally recognised.
Can I complete an apprenticeship or traineeship while I'm still at school?
Yes. A school-based apprenticeship or traineeship lets you start your training and paid work while finishing Year 11 and 12. It counts towards your senior schooling and gives you a head start on your qualification.
How much do apprentices and trainees get paid during their training?
Apprentices and trainees are paid by their employer under the relevant award or agreement. Rates depend on the industry, your age, the stage of your training and whether you're full-time, part-time or school-based. The Fair Work Ombudsman publishes current award rates.
How does a school-based apprenticeship work in Queensland?
You split your week between school, paid work with an employer, and training. The hours you complete go towards both your senior schooling and your qualification, so you leave school already part-way through an apprenticeship or traineeship. Your school, employer and Major Training coordinate the arrangement together.
What happens to my apprenticeship if my employer closes down or can no longer support my training?
Your training contract can be transferred to a new employer so you don't lose the progress you've made. It's worth contacting us and your Australian Apprenticeship Support Network provider quickly, as they help arrange the transfer and keep your apprenticeship on track.
Can I get credit for work I've already done so I can complete my apprenticeship faster?
Possibly. Through Recognition of Prior Learning, skills and experience you already have can be formally assessed and credited towards your qualification, which can shorten your apprenticeship. Talk to us about an RPL assessment.
Is there an age limit for starting an apprenticeship or traineeship?
No. There's no upper age limit. People start apprenticeships and traineeships at all ages, including as a career change later in life.
What are my rights and responsibilities as an apprentice or trainee, and what obligations does my employer have?
As an apprentice or trainee you're entitled to be paid correctly, trained properly and given time to complete your studies. In return, you're expected to attend, work safely and put effort into your training. Your employer must provide suitable work, supervision and support, and release you for training. These obligations are set out in your training contract.
Where are Major Training's campuses located?
Major Training has campuses across South East Queensland and in Far North Queensland: Virginia in North Brisbane, Yatala on the Gold Coast, Morayfield, Dinmore at Ipswich, and Cairns. You can see addresses and details for each site on our locations page.
How do I find out when the next intake for a specific course is scheduled at my preferred location?
Our current course schedule shows upcoming dates by course and location. If you can't see a date that suits you, call us on 1300 790 822 and we'll let you know what's coming up or add you to the list for the next available intake.
Can Major Training come to my workplace or a regional site to deliver training, and how does that work?
Yes. We run on-site training at workplaces and regional sites across Queensland and beyond. You tell us the courses, the number of people and the location, and we organise trainers, equipment and assessment to come to you. It's a practical option for teams and for sites a long way from a campus.
How far in advance do I need to book a course?
As early as you can. Popular courses and licences fill quickly, so booking ahead gives you the best choice of dates. That said, it's always worth checking with us, because places do open up at short notice.
How often do short courses and high-risk licence courses run?
Many of our short courses and high-risk licence courses run regularly, often weekly or fortnightly at our busier locations. Frequency depends on the course and the campus, so the course schedule is the best place to check current dates.
Are there courses available on weekends or outside of standard business hours to suit shift workers?
Some courses can be arranged outside standard hours, particularly for groups and workplace bookings. Availability varies, so let us know what you need and we'll tell you what's possible.
What happens if I miss a training day due to illness or emergency?
Let us know as soon as you can on 1300 790 822. Depending on the course and how much you've missed, we'll work with you to reschedule or catch up. The sooner you're in touch, the easier it is to sort out.
Does the course schedule change depending on the time of year?
It can. Demand shifts through the year, and dates around public holidays and the Christmas period are usually adjusted. The published schedule always reflects the current dates, so check there or ask our team.
What training options are available for rural and remote areas?
For rural and remote workers we offer on-site delivery, where trainers travel to you, and online or blended options for courses that allow it. If getting to a campus is difficult, contact us and we'll find an option that works.
Can I transfer my enrolment to a different campus or a different course date if my circumstances change?
In most cases, yes. If your plans change, get in touch and we'll do our best to move you to another date or location. Transfers are easier to arrange with a bit of notice.
Are my travel costs covered to and from the training centre?
Travel to and from training is generally the student's own cost. Some funding programs or employers may help in particular cases, so it's worth asking us or your employer whether any assistance applies to your situation.
Are there any additional fees not included in the cost (e.g. materials, uniforms, equipment)?
Most course fees cover your training, assessment and certification. Some courses ask you to bring your own personal protective equipment, and a few have extra material costs. Any additional fees are made clear before you enrol, so you won't be caught out.
What government funding programs are available in Queensland to help cover the cost of my training?
Queensland offers several subsidies that can reduce or cover course costs, including User Choice for apprenticeships and traineeships, the Certificate 3 Guarantee, and Higher Level Skills. Eligibility depends on the program, the course and your circumstances. Our team can check which ones you may qualify for.
Am I eligible for User Choice funding, and how do I find out which courses are subsidised under this program?
User Choice helps fund eligible apprenticeships and traineeships in Queensland. Whether you qualify depends on the course and your situation. Tell us the qualification you're interested in on 1300 790 822 and we'll confirm whether it's subsidised and what you'd be eligible for.
What is the Queensland Higher Level Skills program?
Higher Level Skills is a Queensland Government subsidy that helps eligible people access certain higher-level qualifications and priority skill sets, usually at Certificate IV level and above. It's aimed at helping workers gain skills that lead to employment or career progression. We can tell you whether a course is covered.
If I withdraw from a course partway through, what is the refund policy and will I lose my government subsidy?
Refunds and the effect on any subsidy depend on when you withdraw and the type of course and funding involved. The details are set out in our enrolment terms and refund policy. If you're thinking about withdrawing, talk to us first, as there may be options that suit you better.
Does Major Training offer payment plans?
Yes, payment options are available for many courses. Ask our team what applies to the course you're interested in and we'll talk you through it.
I am currently unemployed or receiving Centrelink — are there any additional funding options or concessions available to me?
There may be. Some funding programs give priority or concession rates to people who are unemployed or receiving income support. Let us know your situation and we'll check what assistance you might be eligible for.
What payment methods are accepted for Major Training courses?
We accept a range of standard payment methods. The options are confirmed at enrolment, so ask our team if you need to know before you book.
How do I apply for government funding for training courses?
The simplest path is to talk to us. Call 1300 790 822 or email info@major.edu.au, and we'll check which subsidies apply to your chosen course, confirm your eligibility, and guide you through the paperwork as part of enrolling. You don't have to navigate it on your own.
What support services does Major Training offer if I'm struggling with course content or assessments?
If you're finding the content or an assessment difficult, tell your trainer or contact our team. We can offer extra support, additional explanation, or adjustments where appropriate. Reaching out early makes a real difference.
What is a Unique Student Identifier (USI), and how do I create one before enrolling?
A USI is a reference number that records your nationally recognised training in one place. You need one to enrol and to receive your qualification. You can create your own for free on the official USI website, and we can help if you get stuck.
What is Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), and how do I find out if I can get one?
Recognition of Prior Learning is a process where your existing skills, experience and knowledge are formally assessed against a qualification. If you can demonstrate competence, you may not need to complete that training again. Contact us for an RPL assessment to find out where you stand.
Does Major Training offer any support for students with learning difficulties, language barriers, or low literacy and numeracy?
Yes. We can put reasonable adjustments and extra support in place for students who need it, including help with language, literacy and numeracy. Let us know at enrolment, or earlier, so we can organise the right support for you.
How do I access my learning materials, assessment tasks, and training records once I'm enrolled?
Once enrolled, you'll be shown how to access your learning materials and assessment tasks, whether that's in class or through our online system. If you need a copy of your training records later, our team can help.
What's the complaints and appeals process if I'm unhappy with an assessment outcome or the way I've been treated?
We take complaints and appeals seriously. There's a formal process that lets you raise a concern or challenge an assessment outcome, and it's set out in our student handbook. Start by contacting our team, who will explain the steps and make sure your concern is properly handled.
Who should I contact if I'm having personal difficulties that are affecting my ability to attend or complete training?
Contact our student support team or your trainer. You can reach us on 1300 790 822 or at info@major.edu.au. If something in your personal life is getting in the way of your training, telling us early means we can look at options like rescheduling or extra support before it becomes a bigger problem.
What are my responsibilities as a student regarding attendance, punctuality, behaviour, and submission of assessments?
You're expected to attend your scheduled training, arrive on time, behave safely and respectfully, and submit your assessments by the due dates. These expectations exist so everyone can train safely and complete on schedule. The full detail is in the student handbook.
How do I request a copy of my certificate or statement of attainment if I've lost mine or need a replacement?
Contact our team on 1300 790 822 or email info@major.edu.au and request a reissue. We can arrange a replacement copy of your certificate or statement of attainment. A small fee may apply.
Where can I find the Major Training student handbook?
The student handbook is available on our website, and we also provide it when you enrol. If you can't find it, ask our team and we'll send you a copy.
How can Major Training help my business upskill existing staff?
We work with businesses to train existing staff through short courses, licences, qualifications and traineeships. Training can run at our campuses or at your workplace, and we can tailor a program around your team's roles and equipment. Tell us your goals and we'll put together an approach.
Is it better for small teams if Major Training experts come directly to our worksite to deliver training?
For many small teams it is. On-site training cuts travel time, keeps your crew together, and lets us train on your own equipment and conditions. Whether it's the best option depends on the course and numbers, so it's worth a quick conversation.
What is a Verification of Competency (VOC), and when does my business need to arrange one for employees?
A Verification of Competency confirms that a worker who already holds a licence or ticket can still safely and competently operate a particular piece of equipment. Businesses commonly arrange VOCs when a worker starts a new role, returns after a break, or moves onto unfamiliar plant. We can carry out VOCs for your team.
How do we set up a traineeship or apprenticeship for a new or existing employee?
Get in touch on 1300 790 822 and we'll walk you through it. Setting up an apprenticeship or traineeship involves a training contract between you and the employee, sign-up through an apprenticeship support network, and a training plan with us. We coordinate the training side and help keep the process simple.
What is a pre-employment assessment, and how can it help reduce risk when hiring new workers?
A pre-employment assessment checks a candidate's skills, competency and sometimes physical capability before you hire them. It gives you an objective picture of whether someone can safely do the job, which reduces the risk of a poor or unsafe hire. We can design assessments around your roles.
Can Major Training build a customised training program around our specific needs and equipment?
Yes. Tailored training is one of the things we do well. We can build a program around your industry, your equipment, your sites and your team, rather than asking you to fit a standard course.
How does Major Training work with group training organisations (GTOs) and employment services providers?
We partner with group training organisations and employment services providers to deliver the training component for apprentices, trainees and job seekers they place. If you're a GTO or provider, contact us to talk about how we can support your candidates.
What are our obligations as a host employer when we take on an apprentice or trainee through Major Training?
As a host employer you provide suitable work and supervision, support the apprentice or trainee to attend training, and maintain a safe workplace. The full obligations are set out in the training contract. We'll make sure you understand them before you commit.
Are there government incentives or subsidies available to businesses that take on apprentices or trainees?
There are often incentives and subsidies for employers who take on apprentices and trainees, and these change from time to time. Your apprenticeship support network can confirm what's currently available, and we're happy to point you in the right direction.
Can Major Training deliver workplace training at scale?
Yes. We deliver training for large workforces and have worked with major employers across construction, transport, mining and other industries. If you need to train a lot of people across multiple sites, talk to us about how we'd structure it.
What safety standards and regulations does Major Training follow?
We follow Australian work health and safety legislation and the standards that apply to registered training organisations. Safety underpins how we run our practical training, both for the work itself and for the way we teach it.
What personal protective equipment (PPE) am I required to bring or wear during practical training sessions?
Practical courses usually require basic PPE such as enclosed footwear, and often hi-vis clothing and other items depending on the course. The exact requirements are confirmed before your course starts, so you know what to bring on the day.
Are there any physical fitness or medical requirements I need to meet before starting a course?
Some practical courses involve physical activity, and a few have specific medical or fitness considerations. If a course has requirements like this, they're explained beforehand. If you're unsure whether a course suits you, ask us before enrolling.
What should I do if I'm injured during a training session?
Tell your trainer straight away. Our trainers are there to help, first aid is available at our training sites, and any injury is managed and recorded properly. Your safety comes first.
How does Major Training ensure that the practical training environment is safe for students and staff?
We manage our training environments the same way a well-run worksite is managed: equipment is maintained, hazards are controlled, group sizes are kept appropriate, and trainers supervise practical work closely. Safe practice is part of what we're teaching, so we model it.
Are there special allowances for students with disabilities and additional support needs?
Yes. We can make reasonable adjustments so students with disabilities or additional needs can take part. Let us know what you need when you enrol and we'll work out the right support with you.
Do I need to disclose any medical conditions or disabilities before enrolling?
It helps to tell us about anything that could affect your training or safety, or where you might need support or adjustments. The information is handled confidentially and is used to make sure your training is safe and suited to you.
Are there first aid facilities at your training centres, and are trainers qualified to administer first aid?
Yes. First aid provisions are in place at our training sites and our trainers are able to respond if someone is hurt.
What are the drug and alcohol policies that apply during training, and are there consequences for non-compliance?
Training, especially practical work on equipment, must be done free of the influence of drugs and alcohol. This is a safety requirement, and students who don't comply can be removed from a session. The detail is covered in our student handbook.
How often do high-risk work licences need to be renewed, and what happens if I let my licence lapse?
High-risk work licences are issued for a set period and must be renewed before they expire. If a licence lapses, you may not be able to keep working on that equipment until it's sorted, and renewing can be more involved than if you'd kept it current. It's best to renew on time.
What career support services does Major Training offer?
Beyond the training itself, we can talk through where a course can lead, what to study next, and how a qualification fits the jobs you're aiming for. If you want help mapping out a pathway, our team is happy to have that conversation.
What entry-level courses or qualifications should I start with if I'm brand new to my industry?
It depends on the industry, but a common starting point is the licence or induction card that lets you legally work on site, followed by an entry-level qualification or ticket. Tell us the field you're moving into and we'll suggest a sensible first step.
What are the next steps after completing a Certificate III apprenticeship?
After a Certificate III you can move into higher qualifications such as a Certificate IV or diploma, add specialised licences and tickets, or step into supervisory and management training. The right next step depends on where you want your career to go.
How do plant operator tickets and high-risk licences improve my employability and earning potential in Queensland?
Tickets and licences are often a basic requirement for site work, so holding them opens up jobs you simply couldn't apply for otherwise. The more relevant licences you hold, the more useful you are to an employer, which tends to improve both your job prospects and your pay.
Are there pathways from short courses or traineeships that lead into full apprenticeships or higher qualifications?
Yes. Short courses and traineeships often act as a stepping stone. They build skills and confidence, and in some cases the training can be credited towards a higher qualification or apprenticeship. We can help you plan a pathway that builds over time.
What industries in Queensland are currently experiencing the strongest demand for skilled tradespeople?
Construction, civil construction, transport and mining have all seen sustained demand for skilled workers in Queensland, along with trades that support major projects and infrastructure. Demand shifts over time, so it's worth asking us what we're seeing across the industries we train for.
I already have trade experience overseas — can my overseas qualifications or skills be recognised in Australia?
Often, yes. Skills and experience gained overseas can sometimes be assessed and recognised here through Recognition of Prior Learning, though formal overseas qualifications may need separate assessment. Talk to us about your background and we'll explain your options.
What are the benefits of taking business courses for my trade job?
Business skills become valuable the moment you want to run jobs, lead a team or start your own operation. Training in areas like management, supply chain or business administration helps tradespeople move beyond the tools into supervision, contracting and ownership.
How do I prove my skills and qualifications to future employers?
Your nationally recognised certificates and statements of attainment are the formal proof, and your licences and tickets show what you're cleared to do. Keeping these together and up to date makes it easy to show an employer exactly what you bring.
What kind of wages and employment outcomes can I realistically expect after completing training with Major Training?
Wages and outcomes depend on the industry, the role, your experience and the labour market, so there's no single figure we can promise. What training does is make you eligible for more roles and more valuable in them. Our team can give you a realistic picture for the specific pathway you're considering.
