OVERVIEW

Major Training’s test and tag training course is ideal for anyone required to inspect, test, and tag equipment in their workplace. Since we are a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), our short course is nationally recognised and will give you the skills you need to legally test and tag electrical equipment, including electrical cord-connected equipment and portable electrical appliances, in line with workplace safety regulations and procedures.

A test and tag course is ideal for anyone working with electrical equipment, including:

  • Electricians (commercial and residential)
  • Heating engineers
  • Safety technicians
  • Construction workers
  • Maintenance workers

The Electrical Safety Act requires employers in Queensland to regularly test and tag electrical equipment. This means test and tag training is valuable for professionals in many industries, such as construction, mining and energy, oil and gas, electrotechnology, and civil construction.

Course Details

This test and tag course includes materials and concepts covered in the following nationally recognised units:

  • UEERL0003 Conduct in-service safety testing of electrical cord-connected equipment and cord assemblies
  • UEECD0007 Apply work health and safety regulations, codes and practices in the workplace

Within the training, you’ll learn how to:

  • Test portable electrical equipment using a portable appliance tester
  • Follow workplace procedures for hazard identification and risk control
  • Conduct visual inspections and apply safe working practices
  • Complete correct risk assessment documentation to meet Australian Standard AS3760 while complying with electrical safety regulations
  • Prepare and conduct safety testing of electrical cord-connected equipment and cord assemblies
  • Tag electrical equipment, complete documentation and maintain legally compliant workplace procedures
  • Record results, including cord-connected equipment documentation, tagging records and incident report forms

This course combines theory and practice, ensuring you develop the practical skills needed to work as a competent person in testing and tagging.

After you have completed the course, you’ll get a statement of attainment (SOA) that proves you have completed the units and demonstrated competency. But to be fully qualified to test and tag in Queensland, you must then apply to the Electrical Safety Office (ESO) for a restricted electrical licence (restricted to electrical testing and tagging work only).

What's INCLUDED:

How to safely enter a work area and follow safe working practices.

Applying workplace procedures for hazard identification, risk assessment, and risk control.

How to prepare and perform testing on electrical appliances, electrical cords, and cord assemblies.

Using a portable appliance tester (PAT) and understanding tagging requirements.

Documenting tag-outs of faulty equipment.

Methods to record test and tag activities, including reporting and workplace compliance requirements with Australian Standards.

You will also learn how to identify potential electrical and non-electrical hazards, complete multiple practical assessment tasks, and follow correct manual handling techniques during testing.

Entry Requirements

There are no entry requirements for this course. However, students must hold or obtain a unique student identifier, be physically capable of performing assessment tasks, and meet basic numeracy skills.

Test & Tag Course with Major

A test and tag course equips individuals with the skills to inspect, test and tag equipment safely and in line with Australian Standards. This includes working with portable electrical equipment, identifying faults, applying safe methods, and understanding the role of a competent person in maintaining electrical safety. Successfully completing test and tag training demonstrates knowledge of electrical safety practices, fault identification, and equipment maintenance. These skills are essential for workplaces that rely on regular testing, tagging, and safe operation of equipment. This qualification supports work across industries where workplace safety, compliance and electrical equipment maintenance are critical.

Possible Roles

Electrical Safety Technician: As an electrical safety technician, you'll conduct visual inspections, electrical tests, and tagging procedures on appliances and equipment in workplaces, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and minimising electrical hazards.

Safety Consultant: Safety consultants with Test and Tag qualifications offer expert advice to businesses on electrical safety practices, helping them establish protocols, conduct safety audits, and maintain a safe working environment.

Compliance Officer: Compliance officers play a key role in workplaces by overseeing safety standards and ensuring that electrical appliances are tested, tagged, and maintained according to legal requirements.

Appliance Repair Technician: Technicians with Test and Tag skills can work as appliance repair professionals, ensuring that appliances are not only repaired but also tested and tagged for safety before being returned to service.

Potential wages could be in the region of $50,000 to $60,000 per year

Awesome!! After coming from TAFE the training is so much better.
Awesome!! After coming from TAFE the training is so much better. Smaller classes better and more knowledgeable teachers who care about the students and more flexible learning (being able to do most of the work from home). TAFE felt like it was just there to keep apprentices there for as long as possible (spending 8 hours to do 2 hours of work) but here it’s all based around the student, come in for the morning to to finish up units then go back to work for the rest of the day.

I recently completed my Certificate III (online) through Major Training Group, and I had a wonderful experience.

My educator, Cathy Fendley, was absolutely fabulous. We had agreed-upon sessions once a week (and sometimes twice a week when needed), and she was always supportive, organised, and encouraging. Cathy helped me tremendously, especially with my case studies, making sure I fully understood the requirements and felt confident in my work.

She also went above and beyond by helping me find a placement closer to my location, which made a big difference for me. During my placement, she visited and gave me such a great morale boost — her support truly meant a lot.

I’m very grateful to have had Cathy as my teacher. She is a wonderful educator and a genuinely caring person. Highly recommend Major Training Group!

I had a fantastic experience with Major Training. Katrina was my trainer for both my EWP and Forklift courses, and she was absolutely amazing, very knowledgeable, patient, and supportive. She explains everything clearly and makes sure everyone feels confident and safe.
I also want to mention Thane. Even though he wasn’t my trainer, he was very friendly and always willing to help.
Great team, professional training, and a very welcoming environment. Highly recommended definitely more than 5 stars! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Highly recommend this RTO! The trainers are extremely knowledgeable, approachable, and always happy to help whenever you need support. They genuinely care about your learning and make sure you understand the material, not just pass the course.

They also create a great environment with things like regular BBQs, which makes it a welcoming and supportive place to study. It’s clear they put real effort into looking after their students and building a strong community.

If you’re considering training here, you won’t regret it.

Highly recommend Major training. I cannot express how much it was a pleasure to be educated and trained by my highly experienced assessor CARL BERRY for helping me complete my C6 Crane ticket. It's alot of theory work and alot of maths and also practical about the Crane as I've had no experience. Carl Berry gave not just me but the other pupils in the classroom the time and the patience to help us to complete and accomplish this course. I'm not gonna lie it is very hard but with the right training studying and perseverance it was all well worth it. Thank you so much Carl for all your hard work and keep it mate. I really do appreciate what you have done for me. And last but not least thank you Major training for having me as a student at your facility.

I can't recommend Paul from Major Training highly enough! He was an incredible instructor who supported me every step of the way in obtaining my HR licence. After failing my first test due to nerves, I was feeling pretty discouraged. However, Paul’s patience, understanding, and encouragement made all the difference.

He took the time to go over everything thoroughly, helping me rebuild my confidence and fine-tune my skills. His calm demeanor helped ease my anxiety. Thanks to Paul’s support, I was able to pass my test.

Thank you Paul, I appreciate the help to better my life!
