Mining and Energy Career Pathways

Queensland’s mining and resources sector is thriving, so there are plenty of jobs and career pathways for anyone with the right qualifications. By studying a course related to mining and energy, you’ll open yourself up to high-paying, in-demand roles from the mines in the Hunter Valley of northern NSW to the solar farms throughout Queensland.

Possible Roles

Mining Operator: An accessible entry point into a high-paying industry. Mining operators work with heavy plant and equipment (like excavators and dozers), so with the right tickets and training, you’ll get a career that offers good wages across Queensland.

Mining Supervisor: Experienced mining workers with strong leadership ability can step into a supervisory role and oversee crews. They coordinate shift operations and ensure production targets are met. Mining Supervisors are among the best-paid supervisory professionals in Australia.

Drill and Blast Technician: Highly specialised professionals responsible for planning and executing controlled blasting operations on mine sites and civil construction projects. It’s technically demanding, well-compensated work that requires high-risk licences and EEHA training.

Solar and Wind Energy Technician: Australia is accelerating its transition to renewable energy, so Solar and Wind Energy Technicians are in high demand. You’ll play a direct role in building the clean energy grid that will power Australia’s future. It's a great career for long-term growth and opportunities.

Electrician: Mining sites and energy facilities run on complex electrical and instrumentation systems, so they need qualified electricians. If you’re willing to work on remote sites or during planned shutdowns, you can even command very high day rates.

Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Advisor: There are rigorous safety and environmental frameworks for mining and energy companies in Australia, meaning there’s strong demand for qualified HSE professionals. This senior, well-respected role offers excellent career progression across both mining and the broader resources sector.

POTENTIAL WAGES COULD BE IN THE REGION OF $80,000 TO $150,000 PER YEAR

Mining & Energy COURSE FAQS

Do I need experience to get into the mining and energy industry?

Not necessarily. While some roles require specific licences or tickets, there are genuine entry-level pathways into the mining and energy industries for people who are new to the sector. Complete the Certificate II in Resources and Infrastructure Work Preparation to kickstart a promising career in one of Australia’s highest-paying sectors.

What licences do I need to work on a mine site in Queensland?

The certifications you need depend on your role, but most mine site workers in Queensland will need a General Induction for Construction (White Card) and a site-specific induction as a minimum. Additional tickets, like a Standard 11 mining induction or specific high-risk machinery licences, may be required depending on the work you’ll be doing.

Is mining and energy a good long-term career in Australia?

Australia’s mining and energy sectors are big and enduring. There’s a strong global demand for resources and a massive ongoing investment in renewable energy infrastructure, which means these sectors offer consistent, stable employment. They’re also great for long-term job security, strong wages, and clear pathways for career advancement.

What is FIFO work and is it right for me?

FIFO means “fly-in, fly-out”. It’s a common work arrangement in the mining industry, where workers are flown to remote mine sites for a set roster period, then return home for their time off. Common rosters include two weeks on, one week off, or eight days on, six days off. It suits people who are comfortable being away from home for stretches of time in exchange for significantly higher wages and extended blocks of time off between shifts.

How much can I earn working in mining and energy in QLD?

The mining and energy sectors are among the highest-paying industries in the state. Entry-level mine site workers can typically expect to earn between $80,000 and $100,000 per year, while experienced operators and specialists working on remote or FIFO rosters can earn well in excess of $120,000-$150,000 per year.
