Civil Construction COURSE FAQS
What’s the difference between civil construction and general construction?
General building and construction typically refers to the building of residential and commercial structures like homes and offices and retail spaces. On the other hand, civil construction focuses on the infrastructure that connects and supports communities, like roads, bridges, tunnels, pipelines, railways, and drainage systems. Both are in strong demand in Queensland, but civil construction tends to offer access to larger, longer-running projects with strong wages and consistent work.
Do I need experience to start a civil construction course?
No prior experience is needed for most entry-level civil construction courses. The training we provide is structured to build your knowledge and practical skills from the ground up, covering everything from safe work practices and site induction requirements to the use of tools and equipment. This means that many civil construction qualifications (especially at Cert 2 or Cert 3 level) are great for beginners and offer the most direct routes to getting qualified and job-ready.
Is civil construction a good career in Queensland?
Queensland has one of the most active civil construction pipelines in the country. The state has billions of dollars committed to road, rail, water, and community infrastructure projects. That investment translates into consistent, long-term demand for qualified civil construction workers at every level, making it one of the more reliable and rewarding career choices available in the current job market.
What licences do I need to work in civil construction?
At a minimum (and as a legal requirement), you’ll need a White Card (General Construction Induction) before setting foot on any civil construction site in Queensland. Depending on your role, you may also need High Risk Work (HRW) licences for operating plant and machinery. Contact us, and we can help you map out the qualifications you need based on the type of work you’re looking to do.
How long does a civil construction course take?
Course length varies depending on the qualification. A White Card or civil construction short course can be completed in a matter of days, while a Certificate II or III in Civil Construction is a more substantial commitment (typically completed over several months). What’s more, many courses are available in flexible formats to suit people who are already working.
