Major Training delivers high-quality dogging training that prepares you to work safely around cranes and hoists. You’ll learn how to perform dogging, sling loads, direct crane movements, and select the appropriate lifting equipment needed for a range of dogging tasks on busy construction projects.

After successful completion of the dogging course, you can apply for your high risk work licence, allowing you to work across construction, mining industries, transport and infrastructure.
We deliver the course across South East Queensland, including Brisbane, Ipswich, the Sunshine Coast and surrounding regions.
What Is a Dogman Ticket?
A Dogman Ticket (DG) is a licence to perform dogging and is required for anyone who needs to guide crane operators safely, perform slinging techniques, or direct crane operators during lifting operations. It covers:
- Choosing and inspecting lifting gear
- Understanding slinging techniques
- Working with crane operators and hoist operators
- Assessing loads, weight and balance
- Keeping worksites safe during dogging operations
Holding a dogging licence shows you can work safely, follow workplace health requirements and play a vital role in safe crane operations.
Course Details
A Dogman or Dogging ticket with Major Training Group is a nationally recognised qualification that will get you site ready for a range of crane operator roles.
You will learn how to:
- Safely sling loads using different slinging techniques
- Perform dogging work in a range of environments
- Inspect lifting equipment and inspect lifting gear
- Direct and guide crane movements
- Assess load weight and select the appropriate lifting equipment
- Communicate clearly using hand signals
- Support crane or hoist operators on active worksites
- Complete practical tasks that build job-ready skills
You’ll also gain the knowledge required to support rigging loads, work on construction projects and assist with conducting rigging tasks under supervision.
What's INCLUDED:
Entry Requirements
- Be able to read and write basic English (Workplace Health and Safety requirement)
- Pass a language, literacy & numeracy assessment (LLN)
- Minimum 18 years of age (Workplace Health and Safety requirement)

- Wear steel-capped or safety boots on site; sun protection Hat, long-sleeved shirt, and pants – are also recommended
High-risk work Licences
- High risk work licences have a 5-year life span. After this period, the licence will need to be renewed. This can be done via the WHS Queensland website.
- If your high risk work licence has expired, you’re not classified as a licenced operator until it’s renewed.
- You have up to 12 months to renew your high risk licence. If it’s past the 12-month period, you’ll be required to re-sit the written and practical exam.
- A VOC cannot be done on an expired licence.
How To Apply For a High Risk Work Licence
- You have 60 days from successfully completing your practical assessment to apply with WorkSafe QLD for your high risk work licence.

Dogman Licence
A Dogman Licence equips individuals with the skills and knowledge required to safely direct and control the movement of loads using cranes and hoists. Holding this licence demonstrates expertise in ensuring the efficient and secure lifting and positioning of heavy loads on construction sites and other work environments. As a licensed Dogman, you play a critical role in promoting workplace safety and operational efficiency in industries reliant on crane operations.
Possible Roles
Potential wages could be in the region of $65,000 to $75,000 per year or around $37 per hour

Course Details
FULL DOGMAN TRAINING & ASSESSMENT
Duration: 5 days
Time: 6.30am to 3pm
Suitable for: This course is the perfect choice if you don’t yet have formal experience in Dogging and are looking at gaining employment or starting a new career. This course will teach you everything you need to know from start to finish and is delivered in person over 5 days by our knowledgeable team.
- Both the formal and informal requirements of the training are completed in a controlled environment at Major Training’s simulated worksites
- Everything you need from start to finish
- 40-hour competency-based training over 5 days delivered by our knowledgeable team or theory online with 3 days practical and gap training, 1 day assessment
- Courses start Mondays
- Assessments are on Fridays
FORMAL DOGMAN ASSESSMENT & TRAINING COURSE
Duration: 1-2 days formal training, 1 day practical training & up to 6 months log book on the job and one day of assessment
Suitable for: Suitable for existing workers requiring a SOA / Dogging Licence to enter the workforce and that can complete the mandatory informal training on the job at their current employment
- Employer involvement and licenced operator required to supervise
- All requirements of the training are completed in a controlled environment at Major Training Group’s high quality simulated worksites throughout QLD and your employers workplace
- Informal training – Up to 40 hours supervised log book training is completed on the job in the workplace
- Formal training is completed at a Major Training site
- Dogging formal training is on the first day of the course with assessment once the logbook is completed
- Employers must agree and fill in all relevant areas of the students logbook
- Students must log hours and detail of relevant tasks performed at their workplace
- Student log book must be signed off by employer or employer’s representative with the relevant OHS licence
- A completed log book with an employer’s letter validating the log is required
- Students have up to 6 months to complete
Experienced Operator Course
Duration: 2 days
Suitable for: Operators with demonstrated previous experience. Applicants are required to provide evidence of prior experience for enrolment in this course, which may include an expired licence. This can be a more economical option for already skilled people.
- For experienced and competent operators on completion of formal training
- Students must log hours and details of relevant tasks performed at their workplace
- Student logbook must be signed off by employer with the relevant WHS licence
- A final skills assessment is conducted when the employer is happy with the skill and knowledge level of the student
- Assessment includes a closed book theory test and a comprehensive practical test
