OVERVIEW
The TLILIC0005 Licence to Operate a Boom-Type Elevating Work Platform course is the nationally recognised HRW unit required to apply for a national high risk work licence for boom-type machines with a boom length 11 metres or more.
Our EWP course combines practical verification, classroom learning, and hands-on training to prepare students to safely operate elevating work platform machinery across a range of environments. This nationally recognised qualification is delivered across Queensland, including Brisbane, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast.
This EWP course gives you the skills to apply for your high risk licence, allowing you to legally and safely operate a boom type elevating work platform with a boom length of 11 metres or more. After successful completion, you’ll hold the qualifications needed to work across construction, mining, telecommunications, warehousing, shutdown maintenance, and infrastructure industries.
Course Details
An elevating work platform is used to lift personnel, tools and materials to elevated areas. This includes boom lifts, scissor lifts, vertical lifts, trailer lifts, and combination platforms. Our training focuses on elevating work platform boom operations over 11m and gives you the skills to operate a boom type EWP safely and efficiently.
You’ll learn how to:
- Plan lifting tasks and apply clear control measures
- Conduct routine checks on your work platform
- Set up the equipment safely
- Operate elevating work platform equipment under supervision
- Operate a boom type elevating work platform in different onsite conditions
- Complete shutdown and secure procedures
- Communicate with ground crews while working at height
- Complete theory assessments and practical tasks as part of competency based training
Training includes both theory and practical verification activities aligned to national high risk work standards.
What's INCLUDED:
Entry Requirements
- Be able to read and write basic English (Workplace Health and Safety requirement)
- Pass a language, literacy & numeracy assessment (LLN)
- Minimum 18 years of age (Workplace Health and Safety requirement)

- Wear steel-capped or safety boots on site; sun protection Hat, long-sleeved shirt, and pants – are also recommended
- Individuals on a student visa are not eligible to enroll in this course.
High-risk work Licences
- High risk work licences have a 5-year life span. After this period, the licence will need to be renewed. This can be done via the WHS Queensland website.
- If your high risk work licence has expired, you’re not classified as a licenced operator until it’s renewed.
- You have up to 12 months to renew your high risk licence. If it’s past the 12-month period, you’ll be required to re-sit the written and practical exam.
- A VOC cannot be done on an expired licence.
How To Apply For a High Risk Work Licence
- You have 60 days from successfully completing your practical assessment to apply with WorkSafe QLD for your high risk work licence.

Elevating Work Platform (over 11m)

Course Details
Full EWP Training & Assessment Course
Duration: 3 days
Time: 6.30am to 3pm
Suitable for: This course is the perfect choice if you don’t yet have formal experience in EWP and are looking at gaining employment or starting a new career. This course will teach you everything you need to know from start to finish and is delivered in person over 3 days by our knowledgeable team.
- A competency-based training program delivered by our knowledgeable team over 3 days.
- Both the formal and informal requirements of the training are completed in a controlled environment at Major Training’s simulated worksites throughout Queensland.
- Training materials include a logbook, training plan, full assessment, and training manual.
Formal EWP Assessment & Training Course
Duration: One day of formal training, up to 6 months logbook on the job and one day of assessment
Suitable for: Suitable for existing workers requiring a SOA / EWP Licence to enter the workforce and that can complete the mandatory informal training on the job at their current employment
- Employer involvement and licenced operator required to supervise
- All requirements of the training are completed in a controlled environment at Major Training Group’s high quality simulated worksites throughout QLD and your employers workplace
- Informal training – Up to 40 hours supervised log book training is completed on the job in the workplace
- Formal training is completed at a Major Training site
- EWP formal training is on the first day of the course with assessment once the logbook is completed
- Employers must agree and fill in all relevant areas of the students logbook
- Students must log hours and detail of relevant tasks performed at their workplace
- Student log book must be signed off by employer or employer’s representative with the relevant OHS licence
- A completed log book with an employer’s letter validating the log is required
- Students have for up to 6 months to complete
Experienced Operators Course
Duration: 2 days
Suitable for: Operators with demonstrated previous experience. Applicants are required to provide evidence of prior experience for enrolment in this course, which may include an expired licence. This can be a more economical option for already skilled people.
- For experienced and competent operators on completion of formal training
- Students must log hours and details of relevant tasks performed at their workplace
- Student logbook must be signed off by employer with the relevant WHS licence
- A final skills assessment is conducted when the employer is happy with the skill and knowledge level of the student
- Assessment includes a closed book theory test and a comprehensive practical test
