What is Career Boost Funding?
And how does it work?
The program delivers training to help individuals develop the higher-level skills needed to secure employment, advance their careers, or progress to further education and training.
Under Career Boost, you may access either:
- one funded training place in either a certificate IV, diploma of advanced diploma qualification under the general training pathway
- or
- a higher-level apprenticeship or traineeship in certificate IV or above.
In addition, under Career Boost, you may access up to 2 funded skill sets in priority industries or sectors.
If you have already accessed 2 apprenticeships or traineeships through a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship or Career Start within the last 10 years, you are not eligible to undertake an apprenticeship or traineeeship under Career Boost.
You cannot do 2 general training pathway qualifications under Career Boost.
Funding Eligibility
General training pathway
To be eligible, you must:
- be aged 15 years or older, and no longer in school
- permanently live in Queensland
- be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or Australian permanent resident (includes humanitarian entrants), or a temporary resident with an eligible visa subclass and working rights on the pathway to permanent residency.
- not already have a certificate IV or higher qualification (including tertiary qualifications) completed within the last 10 years immediately preceding the individual’s enrolment (qualifications completed as a school student, foundation skills qualifications, and Skilling Queensland for Work (SQW) programs don’t do not impact eligibility). *Note: This eligibility requirement does not apply to individuals seeking to enrol in a skill set.
- not be enrolled in another DTET-funded qualification, even if it’s on hold or deferred, (foundation skills qualifications and self-funded/fee-for-service qualifications do not impact eligibility).
Along with the eligibility criteria above, specific entry requirements or exemptions may apply to certain funded qualifications and skill sets. These are set by industry or sector requirements, as well as national training package guidelines.
Apprenticeship or traineeship pathway
To be eligible, you must:
- not be a school student
- be currently employed as a Queensland apprentice or trainee (under a registered training contract) in an eligible apprenticeship or traineeship qualification funded through this program (This eligibility requirement does not apply to individuals seeking to enrol in a skill set);
- not be enrolled in another DTET-funded qualification, even if it is on hold or deferred, (foundation skills qualifications and self-funded/fee-for-service qualifications do not impact eligibility);
- not have already completed 2 government-funded apprenticeship or traineeship qualifications (including a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship) within the last 10 years immediately preceding the individual’s enrolment, with the exception of qualifications funded by the Department under a Skilling Queenslanders for Work (SQW) Program.
- Not hold a certificate IV or higher qualification (general pathway or apprentice/trainee) completed within the last 10 years.

Through the Career Boost Funding, the government contributes towards the cost of training for eligible Queenslanders.
Instead of paying for the full cost of training, students or their employers will pay a reduced amount.
The program provides the flexibility for students, and their employers to select a government-approved registered training organisation (RTO or training provider) to provide the training.
- The prospective student must be employed full-time or part-time and have access to a workplace relevant to the qualification.
- You do not need a secondary school certificate or other qualification to be able to do an Australian Apprenticeship.
- You can do an Australian Apprenticeship if you are a school leaver, re-entering the workforce, or as an adult worker simply wishing to change careers.
- You can even begin your Australian Apprenticeship while you’re still at school finishing Years 10, 11, or 12.
- Australian Apprenticeships offer opportunities for you to train, study and earn an income at a variety of qualification levels in most occupations as well as in traditional trades.
- As an Australian Apprentice, you can combine time at work with training and can be either full-time, part-time, or school-based.
- When you finish your Australian Apprenticeship, you will have a nationally recognised qualification that can take you anywhere in Australia and one that is held in high regard in many overseas countries as well.
- You will have many options for your future to think about and choose from.
