State Funding - QLD

Career Start Funding

Career Start, funded by Department of Trade, Employment and Training supports Queensland job seekers to start their career, or move into more skilled roles or full-time employment.

What is Career Start Funding?

And how does it work?

You can participate in either a general training pathway, or an employment-based apprenticeship or traineeship pathway. You’ll receive reduced-cost entry-level training aligned to the skill outcomes required by industry.

Under Career Start, you may access up to 2 funded training places through one of the following options:

  • a qualification in a certificate III under the general training pathway and an apprenticeship or traineeship. If the apprenticeship or traineeship is completed first, you are not eligible to access a general training pathway qualification under Career Start

or

  • two apprenticeships and traineeships in either a certificate II or III (school-based apprenticeships and traineeships are included in this total).

Funding Eligibility

General training pathway

To be eligible, you must:

  • be aged 15 years or older, and no longer in school
  • permanently live in Queensland
  • be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, Australian permanent resident (includes humanitarian entrants), or a temporary resident with an eligible visa subclass
  • not already have a certificate III or higher qualification completed within the last 10 years (qualifications completed as a school student, and foundation skills qualifications don’t count)
  • not be enrolled in another qualification, even if it’s on hold or deferred, whether funded by us (Department of Trade, Employment and Training) or not (foundation skills qualification don’t count).

Along with the eligibility criteria above, specific entry requirements or exemptions may apply to certain funded qualifications and skill sets. These are set by industry or sector requirements, as well as national training package guidelines.

  • not be enrolled in another qualification
  • not have already completed 2 apprenticeship or traineeship qualifications (including a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship) within the last 10 years.

Further InFormation

Through the Career Start Funding, the government contributes towards the cost of training for eligible Queenslanders.

Instead of paying for the full cost of training, students or their employers will pay a reduced amount.

The program provides the flexibility for students, and their employers to select a government-approved registered training organisation (RTO or training provider) to provide the training.

  • The prospective student must be employed full-time or part-time and have access to a workplace relevant to the qualification.
  • You do not need a secondary school certificate or other qualification to be able to do an Australian Apprenticeship.
  • You can do an Australian Apprenticeship if you are a school leaver, re-entering the workforce, or as an adult worker simply wishing to change careers.
  • You can even begin your Australian Apprenticeship while you’re still at school finishing Years 10, 11, or 12.
  • Australian Apprenticeships offer opportunities for you to train, study and earn an income at a variety of qualification levels in most occupations as well as in traditional trades.
  • As an Australian Apprentice, you can combine time at work with training and can be either full-time, part-time, or school-based.
  • When you finish your Australian Apprenticeship, you will have a nationally recognised qualification that can take you anywhere in Australia and one that is held in high regard in many overseas countries as well.
  • You will have many options for your future to think about and choose from.
