What is a carpentry course?
Carpentry courses teach basic to advanced woodworking skills, including joining, sawing, drilling, framework, formwork, sanding, and finishing. You’ll learn how to use power tools on wood and construct fittings and installations for both residential and commercial purposes. Carpentry courses are taught from Cert 1 through Cert 3 (carpentry apprenticeship) and upwards.
Are carpenters well paid in QLD?
It depends on the role. Junior and apprentice carpenters earn modest wages owing to their relative inexperience. But with experience and supplementary carpentry qualifications (like specialisms in working at heights and construction-centred courses), carpenters can earn upwards of $80,000 per year in Queensland.
What qualifications do I need for carpentry?
To become a recognised and qualified carpenter, you’ll need at least a Level 1 certification in carpentry or woodworking. Company-contracted carpenters typically complete a carpentry apprenticeship too, which is a Level 3 certification (Certificate III in Carpentry) and takes up to 48 months to complete.
Should I combine carpentry courses with others?
That depends on what you want to do. Carpenter courses are typically enough for anyone who wants to work with wood in a small-scale capacity (such as being a residential or freelance carpenter). But if you want to progress to more complex work, earn more responsibilities, or work on specialist sites (like in industrial settings or hazardous areas), you’ll need specialist qualifications.
How long does it take to become a carpenter?
Normally between 2-5 years, depending on your previous experience and where you want to get to. Professional carpenters in Australia usually undergo years of training, first as an apprentice, then as a fully qualified carpenter. Completing a carpentry apprenticeship, for example, takes around 4 years, and it’s worth it since you’re getting paid at the same time.
