What is an EWP course?
An EWP course teaches you how to safely use an elevated work platform (EWP). This includes any mechanical device used to lift workers to height, such as a boom lift, scissor lift, or cherry picker. EWP courses are typically short courses lasting 2-7 days. At the end, you’ll get a statement of attainment that lets you apply for your EWP licence.
Do I need a licence to operate an EWP in Queensland?
That depends on the type of EWP you want to operate. In Queensland, a High Risk Work (HRW) licence is required to operate boom-type EWPs that can reach 11 metres or higher. Scissor lifts under this threshold don’t require an HRW licence, though training is still strongly recommended.
Is EWP high risk?
Yes, EWP (elevating work platform) licences require specialist high-risk training. You must complete an EWP High Risk Work (HRW) course from a Registered Training Organisation like Major Training to apply for your HRW licence.
How long does an EWP licence last?
An EWP licence is valid for 5 years in Queensland and NSW. You’ll need to renew your licence before it expires to continue operating EWPs legally on site. We offer refresher training for EWP courses.
Can I operate any EWP with one licence?
In most cases, no. You can only operate the EWP that you are qualified for. For example, if you’ve completed your boom lift licence that lets you operate EWPs under 11m, you can’t then operate a scissor lift that’s over 11m without getting the relevant licence for larger EWPs. Always check with your training provider about which EWP equipment you can operate with your licence. You may need to complete another training course to diversify the platforms you can use.
