What qualifications do I need to be a rigger?
All riggers in Queensland – and throughout Australia – need a high-risk work (HRW) licence in rigging. You can get your rigging licence by completing either the Basic, Intermediate, or Advanced Rigging Licence course form a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) like Major Training. Then, you apply for your rigging licence through WorkSafe QLD or SafeWork NSW.
What’s the best rigging certification?
The best rigging qualification depends on your goals. A basic rigging licence is the most straightforward start point, so it’s the best certification for entering the field. But to take on more complex work (and target those higher pay packets), the best rigging licence is the Advanced level one.
Should I be a dogger or a rigger?
That depends on where you want to start and how far you want to go. Dogging is the more accessible entry point, since it’s a shorter course and gets you working on site quickly. Plus, it covers slightly less complex concepts. Rigging, meanwhile, builds on dogman skills and opens the door to more responsibilities and, therefore, higher-paying work. Many tradies in Queensland get their dogging licence first and then progress to rigging from there.
How much do dogman courses cost in QLD?
A dogging licence costs between $1,250 and $1,600 in QLD, depending on the duration of the course and your previous training history and work experience. As a trainee dogman, you may also choose to complete rigging courses, especially if you want to boost your career progression, so costs can add up further.
Do you have to be certified to do rigging or dogging in QLD?
Yes, in Queensland you cannot perform rigging or dogging operations without a licence. This goes for the rest of Australia too. If you want to become a dogman or rigger, or you’re already a junior tradie and want to take on more responsibilities in these areas, you’ll have to complete a dogman or rigging course and apply for the relevant licence.
