Why Book the Non-Slewing Crane and Dogging Tickets Together
A non-slewing crane licence covers running the crane. It does not cover slinging the load or directing the lift, even though most employers hiring for a crane operator role expect both sets of skills. Similarly, having just a dogging licence or rigging training means you are not the operator who can run the crane, but you have to wait on someone else to sling and direct every load.
Training them in the same block means you walk into an interview with what the role actually asks for. Holding both a dogging licence and a crane operator licence from day one means you can plan and execute a lift start to finish, rather than handing half of it to someone else on site. Like every crane and dogging combination we run, this pairing falls under our High Risk Work Licence category, where stepping into crane work almost always means adding a dogging ticket too.
Who does this bundle suit? New crane operators entering the industry, tradespeople adding a crane ticket to an existing skill set, and employers who need a crew member covering both the crane and the dogging side of a lift.
For an employer, a crew member who can run the crane and manage the lift themselves is worth more on smaller jobs where a second dedicated dogger is not always rostered on. It also means fewer gaps to cover when someone is off, since one person’s absence does not take two separate skill sets off the job at once.
Training runs at our Yatala campus, with both courses booked consecutively rather than as two separate intakes weeks apart, so the practical assessment for each ticket happens back-to-back.
Want to move up to a heavier crane class? Our Slewing Crane Licence C6, rated up to 60 tonnes, is the usual next step for non-slewing operators who want to take on bigger lifts once dogging is already covered.
