They say a company is only as good as its people. Speaking to the staff and trainers of Major Training, it’s easy to see how much of an input they’ve had in the success of the business.
General Manager Matthew Tenkate has thanked past and present staff for helping to get Major Training to where it is today, and as the business celebrates its 20-year anniversary, we shine the spotlight on the members of #TeamMajor behind the scenes.
Trainer and assessor Charma is one of the many team members who have contributed to Major’s success.
We asked her a few questions to learn what it’s like to work for Major Training, how she came to join the team, and where the business is heading.
How long have you worked with Major Training?
“Almost one year.”
What is your current position with Major Training?
“Training Manager (Short Programs).”
Has this always been your position here?
“No, I originally started as a Trainer and Assessor. I used to look after our Certificate III in Surface Extraction program. I have been blessed to have some fantastic people come through that program who have later gone on to positions within the mining industry. I also taught the Certificate IV and Diploma in Workplace Health and Safety, which is something that I am very passionate about.”
“I applied myself and did my best to represent Major Training’s morals. When the opportunity came up, I applied and was lucky enough to be given the chance.”
What does a normal day in your life look like?
“Early starts! I am normally ensuring that our students and trainers are all happy and well taken care of to start their day off positively. A lot of emails, phone calls and hopefully adding value to what the team does. We are always continuously growing as an organisation in many ways and this takes a village to achieve.”
What made you want to work with Major Training?
“Major Training has a very positive reputation within the industry and if you want to be good at what you do, you have to surround yourself with likeminded people. I saw then and still see the nurturing environment that the Major family create. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of that every day?!”
Has working with Major Training been different to what you were expecting?
“Yes! Major Training has a flexibility that I have not had before. The Major family is all about growth, not just for our employees and business, but also for our clients and students. It is this collaborative environment that makes Major Training different from the rest.”
What’s your favourite thing about working with Major Training?
“The support and sense of family that Major delivers to its workforce and clients. This family environment encourages you to strive for better and continually grow.”
How has the business changed since you started working here?
“Over the past 12 months, the business has been focusing on its systems and structure. This has enabled us to deliver the highest quality educational experience to our students.”
What are some of the key achievements/proud moments you’ve had working with Major Training?
“I am proud of the standard of training that I have aided in delivering. I am proud of all of my past students who trusted the Major Training programs and myself as the trainer and have since bettered their career. I am proud of my team for helping me settle into my current position and having such an influence over our package updates.”
If you were to do a course with Major Training, what would you do and why?
“I would do a slewing crane course! Between our High Risk Trainers, we have well over 200 years of experience! I have seen how our team delivers engaging and informative courses and would love to spend a week soaking up the wealth of knowledge.”
Can you (legally) operate any of the heavy vehicles/machinery at Major Training?
Yes, most of the heavy equipment. I come from a mining background so have most machinery qualifications.
