OVERVIEW
Construction operations are full of high-risk tasks, and cranes and hoists are at the centre of many of them. As a result, Dogmen are a key part of construction operations. They work closely with crane operators to ensure loads are lifted and positioned safely.
At Major Training, you’ll learn how to perform dogging, sling loads, direct crane movements, and select the appropriate lifting equipment required for a range of dogging tasks.

Course Details
Completing Major Training’s Dogman course will get you a nationally recognised qualification, allowing you to apply for a high-risk work licence and work as a Dogman on construction and industrial worksites across the Sunshine Coast. The coastal strip’s mix of metropolitan infrastructure and agricultural landscapes makes it a region with strong and diverse job opportunities for Dogmen across both urban and rural worksites.
Our training includes 5 days of formal classes, tackling all the necessary theoretical knowledge along with supervised logbook training for up to 40 hours. The goal is for learners to gain practical experience under immersive guidance.
The Sunshine Coast has many great job opportunities for those with a Dogman ticket. One good example is the Sunshine Coast Airport expansion, which would surely require Dogmen, as it involves large-scale crane operations, structural steel installation, and heavy material handling.
The development of SunCentral Maroochydore is also a long-term Central Business District project featuring commercial towers, mixed-use precincts, and civil infrastructure works. All of this entails high-rise construction and staged development that require continuous lifting and rigging support roles.

Dogman Course Sunshine Coast Career Pathways
Dogmen play an important role in construction sites, infrastructure projects, industrial facilities, and other environments where cranes are used. They prepare loads for lifting operations and communicate with crane operators to make sure loads are moved safely and accurately. In order to perform these duties, you’ll need a Dogman licence as proof that you’ve received the training needed to function with cranes, lifting equipment, and load-handling operations safely on site.

FULL DOGMAN TRAINING & ASSESSMENT
Duration: 5 days
Time: 6:30am to 3pm
Who is this course for: This course is suitable for those with little or no formal Dogging experience who are looking to gain employment or start a new career. Delivered in person over five days, the course covers everything you need to know from start to finish.
- The formal and informal requirements of the training are completed in a controlled environment at Major Training’s simulated worksites
- Everything you need from start to finish
- 40-hour competency-based training over 5 days delivered by our knowledgeable team or theory online with 3 days practical and gap training, 1 day assessment
- Courses start Mondays
- Assessments are on Fridays
FORMAL DOGMAN ASSESSMENT & TRAINING COURSE
Duration: 1-2 days formal training, 1 day practical training & up to 6 months log book on the job and one day of assessment
Who is this course for: Suitable for existing workers requiring a SOA / Dogging Licence to enter the workforce and that can complete the mandatory informal training on the job at their current employment
- Employer involvement and licenced operator required to supervise
- All requirements of the training are completed in a controlled environment at Major Training Group’s high quality simulated worksites throughout QLD and your employers workplace
- Informal training – Up to 40 hours supervised log book training is completed on the job in the workplace
- Formal training is completed at a Major Training site
- Dogging formal training is on the first day of the course with assessment once the logbook is completed
- Employers must agree and fill in all relevant areas of the students logbook
- Students must log hours and detail of relevant tasks performed at their workplace
- Student log book must be signed off by employer or employer’s representative with the relevant OHS licence
- A completed log book with an employer’s letter validating the log is required
- Students have up to 6 months to complete
EXPERIENCED OPERATOR COURSE
Duration: 2 days
Who is this course for: Operators with demonstrated previous experience. Applicants are required to provide evidence to enrol in this course, which may include an expired licence. This is a practical option for those who aren’t entirely new to Dogging.
- For experienced and competent operators on completion of formal training
- Students must log hours and details of relevant tasks performed at their workplace
- Student logbook must be signed off by employer with the relevant WHS licence
- A final skills assessment is conducted when the employer is happy with the skill and knowledge level of the student
- Assessment includes a closed book theory test and a comprehensive practical test
