Unearthing the next generation of mining talent

Anglo American, Moranbah High School and Major Training Groups Pilot Student Program

In an exciting and innovative step forward for education and career development, Moranbah State High School (MSHS) has launched a pilot student program in collaboration with Anglo American and Major Training Group. This initiative offers high school students a unique opportunity to gain real-world experience in the mining sector and secure future employment in one of Australia’s most vital industries.

A Groundbreaking Collaboration

The program, spearheaded by Anglo American, one of the world’s leading mining companies which operate five steelmaking coal mines in the Bowen Basin, aims to bridge the gap between traditional classroom learning and the dynamic demands of the mining industry. By teaming up with Major Training Group to deliver the training components of the program, it ensures that students receive top-tier training and practical experience.

This VET in Schools (VETiS) program was funded by Department of Employment, Small Business and Training.

UEE22020 Certificate II in Electrotechnology (Career Start): The Gateway to Mining Careers

At the heart of this initiative is the UEE22020 Certificate II in Electrotechnology (Career Start), a course designed to equip students with the fundamental skills and knowledge required in the mining industry. This certification not only provides a solid foundation in electrotechnology but also opens doors to numerous career opportunities within the sector including engineering and project management.

Moranbah North Mine general manager Paul Stephan said they had received more than 1,500 applications for the 14 apprentice and new-to-industry roles advertised last month and would
advertise in August for the next intake of school-based apprentices.

“In supporting this electrotechnology program, we are reinforcing our commitment to local jobs and community development,” Paul said.

Real-World Experience and Industry Exposure

One of the standout features of this program is its focus on providing students with hands-on, real-world experience. Unlike traditional educational pathways, this initiative immerses students in the actual working environments of the mining sector. This direct exposure is invaluable, offering insights and practical skills that are crucial for a successful career in mining. Students will also be learning through Virtual Reality, with scenarios specifically designed by Next World, which can provide hazardous or complicated scenarios through virtual headsets, fostering confidence and experience in risk management.

MSHS student Alexandra Ibbertson, who is about to finish the electrotech course, was also selected as a school-based trainee at Anglo American’s Moranbah North Mine in January. She said the course and the traineeship had been invaluable for steering her to a career in the mining industry.

“It has shown me a full, in-depth scope of what will come if I end up as an electrician in the field,” she said.

Capturing Local Talent

A key objective of the program is to harness and nurture local talent. By targeting school leavers from Moranbah State High School, the initiative aims to create a direct pipeline of skilled and trained individuals ready to enter the mining workforce. This focus on local talent not only benefits the students but also strengthens the community and supports the local economy.

A Track Record of Success

The pilot program has already demonstrated remarkable success, boasting a 100% completion rate. Every student who has participated in the program so far has successfully completed their certification and moved on to promising opportunities in the mining sector. This impressive track record underscores the program’s effectiveness and the dedication of all involved parties.

Looking Ahead

As the program continues to evolve, it promises to provide even more students with the skills and experience they need to thrive in the mining industry. With the ongoing support of Anglo American, Major Training Group, and Moranbah State High School and the Department of Employment, Small Business and Training the future looks bright for the next generation of mining professionals.

This pioneering initiative exemplifies the power of collaboration between industry and education. By offering students practical training and direct pathways to employment, it sets a new standard for vocational education and career readiness. The success of this pilot program paves the way for its potential expansion, promising greater opportunities for students across the region.
