“Cars for Community” Donation Fuels Student Learning

Major Training Group has made a significant contribution to the Mackay Engineering College by funding the provision of two vehicles— a Ford Territory and a Mitsubishi Lancer— for students to work on during their practical workshop hours, ensuring they are safe and roadworthy to gift to a chosen non-for profit organisation in the area.

This initiative, known as “Cars for Community,” is a hands-on educational program involving nearly 50 students from various schools in the Mackay region, which is hosted at the college.

Student Ryan, shared his enthusiasm about the program: “It’s a massive learning curve. You actually learn a lot by just pulling everything apart and understanding where it all goes and how it works.”

The success of this initiative is also thanks to the generous sponsorship of Repco, Protector Windscreens, Goodyear, Baker’s Creek Wreckers, DC Power Automotive Solutions and Roadworthy’s To Go. These sponsors have contributed either financially or through the donation of their time and expertise, working directly with the students and sharing valuable industry knowledge.

Additionally, as part of the program, students will provide regular services and detailing for the vehicles, which is a required unit of competency for their studies.

One of the previous beneficiaries of this initiative was The Neighbourhood Hub Mackay, which received a donated Toyota Camry station wagon. Nicolette, General Manager of The Neighbourhood Hub, highlighted the impact of the donation on their food diversion program at the 4 George Street Centre. Since 2021, they have diverted or collected over 71 tonnes of food from local supermarkets across the Mackay region. The addition of the donated vehicle has expanded their fleet, providing a dedicated car for staff and volunteers to use.

Nicolette remarked, “It allows us to be able to do other food deliverables and not have to rely on only one car. With these students working on these cars and being a part of it all, it’s linking the community back together.”

As Major continues to expand our philanthropic endeavors, we hope to encourage and inspire other organisations or individuals to do the same and if you are in a position to donate a run down vehicle or the funding towards one, contact Mackay Engineering College and keep Cars For Community driving forward.

Stay tuned to find out who the deserving new owners will be at the next Car for Community handover in October.
