If we want real cultural change, we must shift how we talk about trades in the classrooms, in media, and around kitchen tables.
- Showcase Real Career Journeys
- Highlight apprentices who’ve progressed into leadership roles or started their own businesses. When students see what’s possible, their perception changes.
- Promote Trades as Future-Proof
- Unlike some university fields, trades aren’t going offshore. They’re not being automated. Construction, transport, machinery operation, and electrical work are essential and secure.
- Connect Students with Industry Mentors
- Facilitating school visits, worksite tours, or ambassador programs helps bridge the gap between education and real-world experience. Let students meet tradies who love what they do and thrive doing it.
University Isn’t the Only Way
This isn’t about university versus VET. It’s about understanding that there’s more than one valid path to a fulfilling career.
Some people learn best by doing. Others want to earn while they learn, and start working sooner. That’s what VET and apprenticeships offer and we need to promote that early in education settings.
It’s time to drop the idea that one path is superior, they both have value and students should feel empowered to choose the one that suits them best.
