Changing Gears at 53 Years

In a world where the traditional path to success often involves persevering through your initial career path for life’s entirety, it’s inspiring to hear stories of individuals who break the mould. Meet 53 year old Paul Carter, one of Major Training Groups Alumni, who decided it wasn’t too late to chase his dreams. Paul made a bold decision to change careers and pursue his passion for truck driving, inspired by seeing a call out from Five Bridges, into our partnered program, TLI31222 Certificate III in Driving Operations.

Five Bridges is a not-for profit, Queensland organisation. They provide practical support in facilitating the Queensland Governments ‘Skilling Queenslanders for Work’ (SQW) funding , choosing Major Training Group as a trusted Registered Training Organisation (RTO 6139) to offer the qualifications needed for those individuals to progress in their career or up-skill to re-enter the workforce.

Upon graduating this program, Paul was elated to drop by the office and share the good news of a local concrete company snapping him up and employing him to drive one of their concrete trucks.

Cameron McCleod, Paul’s trainer, reflects on his dedication to the program.

“The force is Strong with this one. He’s a bit of a rebel. But he’s also a really smart guy with a good nature and willingness to listen and learn.”

“It’s always really awesome to see students again a few months down the track when they drop in and tell you about what they’ve been up to and jobs they’ve secured as a result of their training. It’s great to see them pull up in a work truck or in uniform looking full of confidence and beaming with pride.” Cameron fondly tells us.

Paul recalls one of his favorite aspects of the course was learning from Cameron and Five Bridges student support officer and former Major student, Sally Nunn.

“Cam and Sally were both excellent, taking the time with all students to help them and explain everything.”

The driving operations program covers everything from safety right though to practical lessons. It equips students with real world knowledge and gives them a taste of what they might expect upon employment within the industry.

“It’s a buzz for me to see such excellent results for so many people who go from being out of work and feeling a bit down when I meet them to opening up a whole heap of opportunities and changing the course of their lives.” Cameron expressed.

Paul’s story is a testament to the fact that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams, no matter your age or circumstances.
