Australia’s trade training landscape is changing. Traditional training models are falling behind — and industry collaboration in trade training is emerging as the smarter way forward.
At Major Training Group, we’re building partnerships that improve learning outcomes, align with real job site needs, and make apprentices more job-ready from day one.
The Old Way Isn’t Working Anymore
Inflexible, outdated training no longer meets the needs of modern trades. Apprentices and employers alike are frustrated by:
- Slow qualification processes
- Outdated content or irrelevant units
- Training that doesn’t align with the job site
The result? High dropout rates, poor engagement, and businesses left to retrain workers post-certification.
Why Industry Collaboration Matters
What Do We Mean by Collaboration?
Industry collaboration in trade training means involving employers, associations, and workforce experts in every stage of training — from design to delivery.
This includes:
- Customising delivery for job site relevance
- Choosing units that match needs
Benefits for Learners
- More practical, job-aligned training
- Faster skill acquisition with real-world context
- Increased job satisfaction and confidence on-site
Benefits for Employers
- Reduced rework and retraining costs
- Faster onboarding and productivity
- Training schedules that work around operations

Real-World Collaboration Examples
Women in Construction Program
Major Training is proud to be the training partner for the Women in Construction (WiC) Program, a powerful joint initiative with Community Solutions and RoadTek (a division of the Department of Transport and Main Roads).
This full-time paid traineeship gives women the opportunity to earn a Certificate III in Civil Construction while gaining on-the-job experience across RoadTek’s ten operational units. The program actively tackles gender imbalance in civil trades, providing a hands-on career pathway and financial security through paid learning.

VETiS Pilot with Anglo American and Moranbah SHS
Through Queensland’s VETiS (Vocational Education and Training in Schools) program, Major Training collaborated with Anglo American and Moranbah State High School to launch a mining-focused education pathway.
With a 100% graduation success rate, this pilot program empowered students with industry-aligned skills, real-world experience, and clearer paths into apprenticeships or employment. The program is one of many ways Major Training is reshaping early trade education.

How Collaboration Supports Priority Skills
Today’s skills shortage isn’t just about numbers — it’s about fit. Employers need workers with the right licences, the right mindset, and real-world awareness of safety, culture, and output expectations.
Industry-aligned training ensures:
- Graduates are site-ready on day one
- Employers aren’t stuck fixing fundamental knowledge gaps
- Productivity doesn’t lag due to training shortfalls

FAQs
Does collaboration cost more?
No. In fact, it often reduces costs by minimising retraining and downtime.
Can we train multiple employees at once?
Yes. Our group training model is cost-effective and efficient for teams.
Is this available for all trades?
We prioritise high-demand industries like civil, electrical, automotive, engineering, construction, logistics, and high-risk training.
A Smarter Way Forward
Training shouldn’t be a box-ticking exercise. It should build safety, performance, and long-term capability.
When RTOs and employers collaborate, we don’t just train — we transform the future of Australian trades.
