How to Get a Forklift Licence: Your Complete Guide to Certification

A forklift licence is undoubtedly one of the best tickets you can get in Australia. If you are looking to start work in warehousing, logistics, construction, or manufacturing, this Australian forklift qualification is your essential first step.

However, you can’t just jump on a machine and start driving immediately. A forklift truck is classified as high-risk equipment. Consequently, to operate one professionally, you legally need a High Risk Work Licence (HRWL).

Below is detailed information on how to get a forklift licence, exactly what the forklift training involves, and furthermore, how to keep it current.

Why Do You Need a Forklift Licence?

The answer is simple: it gets you hired, and more importantly, it keeps you safe.

1. It’s The Law

Firstly, in Australia, it is illegal to operate a forklift without a licence. Because forklifts are classified as high risk work, the law dictates that you must successfully complete training. Subsequently, you must pass an assessment to prove you can operate the machine without hurting yourself or your workmates.

2. It Opens Doors

Secondly, a current forklift licence makes you a highly flexible employee. Almost every industry that moves gear—from massive warehouses to small brickyards—needs licensed operators. As a result, career opportunities are huge in this sector. Having this ticket on your resume puts you at the front of the line.

Understanding the Licence (Class LF)

What is the ‘LF’ Class?

Specifically, the licence you need is the Class LF High Risk Work Licence. This licence to operate is a national qualification. Therefore, once you have it, it’s recognised in Queensland, New South Wales, WorkSafe Victoria, and every other state and territory.

What Is a Forklift Truck?

Technically, the LF class covers a powered industrial truck equipped with a mast and an elevating load carriage to which is attached a pair of fork arms or other arms. This definition separates it from a standard pallet truck or pedestrian operated truck.

What Can You Drive?

With an LF forklift licence, you can operate a forklift truck equipped with a mast. This covers various forklift types, including:

  • Standard Counterbalance Forklift Truck: The most common type you see in warehouses.

  • High Reach Forklifts: Used for stacking pallets high in racking systems.

  • All Fuel Types: Gas, diesel, and electric.

However, it is important to note that this licence does not cover an order picker (where you go up with the load). That requires a separate LO licence.

What Happens in the Forklift Training Course?

Many people ask us what actually happens during the course. At Major Training, we don’t just tick boxes; instead, we make sure you are confident.

Day 1: Theory and Safety

Your forklift truck course starts in the classroom. After all, you can’t drive safely if you don’t understand the machine.

  • Work Health & Safety: We cover the work health laws and your responsibilities in the workplace.

  • Load Calculations: In addition, you will learn the maths behind the lift. This includes a numeracy assessment to ensure you can read load plates and calculate weight limits.

  • Stability: Understanding the “Stability Triangle” is key to preventing tip-overs.

Day 2: Practical Training

Next, you move out of the classroom and into our huge training centres. Under the guidance of an experienced operator, you will get behind the wheel.

  • Pre-Start Checks: Every experienced operator knows safety starts before you turn the key. You will learn routine checks like inspecting tyres, hydraulics, and guards.

  • Driving & Manoeuvring: You will practice steering through obstacles, reversing, and parking.

  • Lifting & Stacking: Finally, you will learn to safely operate the forklift controls to lift loads, tilt the mast, and place pallets at different heights.

Our practical training is designed to give you maximum seat time. As a result, you are ready for the final assessment.

How to Get Your Licence: Step-by-Step

Fortunately, getting qualified is straightforward if you follow these specific steps.

Step 1: Check You Are Eligible

Before you sign up for a forklift truck course, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You must be at least 18 years old.

  • You need basic English and numeracy requirements (to pass the written and numeracy assessment). Specifically, you must be able to speak, read and write English.

  • You need 100 points of ID (like a passport, driver’s licence, or Medicare card).

  • You must have a Unique Student Identifier (USI) issued by the Commonwealth Government.

Step 2: Enrol with a Registered Training Organisation

Then, you need to train with a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). At Major Training, we provide assessment services and forklift training courses across South East Queensland.

Step 3: Do The Forklift Training

The licence course is a mix of classroom learning and seat time.

  • Theory: You’ll learn work health and safety rules, how to calculate loads, and how to perform routine checks.

  • Practical Training: This is the fun part. You get on the forklift and learn to steer, lift, stack, and move loads. Our forklift truck training ensures you can safely operate the machine.

Furthermore, we cover counterbalance forklift training and high reach forklift training principles so you are job-ready.

Step 4: Pass the Assessment

To get your ticket, you have to pass a final assessment with an accredited assessor. This includes:

  • A written/verbal knowledge test.

  • A practical assessment (driving test) where you show you can operate safely.

Successful completion of this assessment is mandatory to apply for your high risk work licence.

Step 5: Apply for Your Card

Once you pass, we give you the paperwork. You then have 60 days to lodge your licence application with Work Health and Safety (WHS) QLD. You pay the fee, and they post your photo ID card to you. In some cases, you may need to lodge via Australia Post.

Where Can You Train?

We have huge training centres set up with real powered industrial truck equipment to get you job-ready.

  • Virginia (North Brisbane): Perfect for anyone on the northside. We’ve got modern fleets and a great facility right in the industrial hub.

  • Yatala (Gold Coast/Brisbane South): Our busy southern hub, ideal for anyone near the Gold Coast or Logan.

  • Morayfield & Ipswich: Additionally, we run regular forklift licence courses at our Morayfield and Dinmore campuses.

  • On-Site: Got a team? We can come to your workplace if you have the right gear.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: How long does the licence last?

A: Your forklift truck licence is valid for 5 years. Therefore, you will need to renew it before it expires to perform high risk work legally.

Q: What is the duration of the Forklift Truck Course?

A: It depends on the location. Typically, our standard forklift truck course is 2 days at Virginia and 3 days at our other sites.

Q: Do I need prior experience?

A: Nope. Our forklift training courses are built for beginners. We teach you everything from the ground up. Consequently, no prior experience is needed to get the best training.

Q: Can I use a work platform with this licence?

A: Yes, provided the work platform (safety cage) is compliant and attached to a forklift you are licensed to operate (LF class).

Q: Does this cover other functions required for machinery?

A: This course covers the functions required specifically for the LF class. However, it does not cover earthmoving equipment, cranes, or other arms not specified in the LF definition.

Q: What if my forklift licence has expired for more than 12 months?

Unfortunately, you cannot simply renew it. If your forklift licence has been expired for longer than 12 months, you are treated as a new applicant by the regulator. Consequently, to be legally compliant, you must retake the full forklift training course and pass the practical assessment and theory tests again.

Q: What is the difference between an LF and LO licence?

The LF licence allows you to operate a forklift truck (like a counterbalance or high-reach) where the mast moves but you stay seated. In contrast, the LO licence is specifically for an “Order Picker” (or stock picker), where the operator’s platform moves up with the load. Therefore, they are separate High Risk Work Licence classes, and holding an LF licence does not authorise you to operate LO equipment.

Q: What happens if I don’t pass the assessment?

Don’t panic. If you are deemed “Not Yet Competent” on the day, you will not get your licence immediately. However, you can re-sit the assessment. Our trainers will provide specific feedback on the areas you need to improve. Subsequently, you can book a re-assessment to demonstrate you can safely operate the machine and successfully complete the course.

Q: How much does the course cost?

A: Course fees vary by location. Right now, we have a promo at Virginia for $499. At other sites, the standard price is $695. Rest assured, course fees are transparent—there are no hidden fees.
