Building Bright Futures
The first day of any new journey is always filled with a mix of nerves and excitement, but at Major Training’s Morayfield site, the air was thick with something even more powerful—hope.
Last week, we had the privilege of welcoming a remarkable group of students from Lee Street State Special School as they embarked on a life-changing opportunity: earning their Certificate I in Construction through the VET in Schools (VETiS) program. Proudly funded by the Department of Trade, Employment and Training and supported by local state member for Morayfield, Mark Ryan, along with Badge Construction Group, who provided PPE to the students, this program is more than just a pathway to skills—it’s a gateway to confidence, independence, and brighter futures.
A First Day to Remember
As the students arrived, there was an undeniable buzz in the air. To ease any first-day jitters, the morning kicked off with a good old-fashioned sausage sizzle—because nothing brings people together like food! Laughter and conversation flowed as the students bonded over breakfast, getting to know each other and their new trainer, Josh Bennett.
For many, this was the first step into a world of hands-on learning, where textbooks are traded for tool belts and classrooms expand into worksites. But for these students, it was more than just about construction—it was about building confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging.
“This is going to provide them with insight into the construction industry. It’s getting them thinking about different career options, which is perfect.” Dan Willett, Community Liaison and Post School Transitions Officer told us.
Meet Saxon – A Leader Among His Peers
Among the students was Saxon, the proud school captain of Lee Street State Special School. His beaming smile said it all—he was ready for the challenge ahead.
“I’m probably going to go for maybe either machinery or some type of cementing, doing that hard work cementing, creating maybe bridges and buildings. That’ll be cool”, Saxon shared.
His words were a testament to the impact of inclusive education and skill-building. It’s not just about getting qualified; it’s about feeling empowered—knowing that with the right support, anything is possible.
More Than a Qualification—A Life-Changing Experience
Major Training has always believed in the power of vocational education to change lives, and this program is proof of that. Through hands-on learning, these students are gaining skills that will help them navigate the workforce, build confidence, and take pride in what they achieve.
“We want to spread the word that our students can absolutely be an asset to your industry,” Dan Willett expressed.
This is what real inclusion looks like—breaking down barriers and ensuring that every student, regardless of ability, has access to opportunities that can shape their future.
Looking Ahead
As the students embark on this journey, they’ll learn more than just construction—they’ll learn perseverance, teamwork, and the satisfaction of seeing something they’ve built with their own hands.
At Major Training, we’re honored to be a part of their story. We can’t wait to see what this cohort achieves and to stand beside them as they lay the foundations for their future—one brick, one lesson, one milestone at a time.
This is just the beginning. Stay tuned as we follow their journey!
