From student to Student Support Officer. Sally Nunn’s graduation success story.

Here at Major Training, we pride ourselves on building meaningful relationships within the community to produce inspiring student success stories and outcomes.

Our partnership with Five Bridges has been a positive pathway to assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders who have experienced barriers to education and employment.

Five Bridges is a not-for profit, Queensland organisation. They connect motivated students with relevant funding and financial assistance which may be available to them. Five Bridges also provides practical support in facilitating the Queensland Governments ‘Skilling Queenslanders for Work’ (SQW) program, choosing Major Training Group as a trusted Registered Training Organisation (RTO 6139) to offer the qualifications needed for those individuals to progress in their career or up-skill to re-enter the workforce.

“Five Bridges has been partnered with Major Training to deliver the Cert III in Driving Operations/HR License for approximately 4 years. During this time we have delivered multiple SQW programs and have a 70% employment success rate.” Five Bridges Employment Programs Manager, Jenni Grierson, told us.

Sally Nunn, a proud Pitjantjatjara woman of the Anangu people, was in the first graduating cohort of 2023 for Cert III in Driving Operations. Sally was connected with Major Training Group through Jenni and was quick to show great aptitude, excelling in this program.

She lived out her childhood dream of passing her truck license and becoming a “truckie”, following in the footsteps of her dad. Upon graduating, Sally was snapped up and recruited by Five Bridges to assist other students providing hands on support in a new position offered to her as a Student Support Officer.

“Sally was engaging in class, assisted fellow students and was committed to the program. She was offered the role after she finished her training. Her role is primarily in the classroom during class, but also post training follow up, assisting students with employment outcomes.” Grierson said.

We caught up with Sally while she was back on campus assisting students in the very classroom she trained in, to chat about her journey.

How did you get involved with Five Bridges originally?

I answered an ad on Facebook and Jenni (Employment Programs Manager at Five Bridges) called me. When I saw the ad, I thought no better time than now, I’m not getting any younger. I was then enrolled in the first class of the year (2023) at Major Training.

What course did you complete here at major?

(TLI131221) Cert III in Driving Operations

How did you find the course delivery and overall experience?

It was great. We had a really good time in class.

Where there any challenges you experienced throughout the course?

Not really no, because Cam taught really well and Linda (from Five Bridges) was great. The teachers are awesome!

What doors has this course opened for you?

Gaining my position with Five Bridges as a Student Support Officer. I also got my truck license, which is something I have always wanted to do because my dad was a ‘truckie’.

Where do you hope your career goes from here?

For the meantime I’d really like to stay with Five Bridges helping students at Major Training. I’m quite happy with that.
