How did 10,000 students access training in priority trades?

Major Training’s “User Choice” Program Access Empowers Over 10,000 Students in Priority Trades.

The User Choice program is proudly funded by the Queensland Government and is essential in its unique approach which aims to provide individuals with the opportunity to select their preferred training provider and training pathway, tailoring their education to better suit their career aspirations and employer needs.

Major Training, with the support of the Department of Employment and Small Business Training (DESBT), has reached a significant milestone in its “User Choice” program, having trained over 10,000 students in priority trade apprenticeships since its inception partnership in 2005.  This remarkable achievement underscores the program’s success in addressing critical skills shortages and bolstering Queensland’s workforce.

The “User Choice” program focuses on priority trades including Manufacturing and Engineering (MEM), Automotive (AUR), Electrotechnology (UEE), Construction, (CPC), and Resources and Infrastructure (RII). These sectors are vital to Queensland’s economic growth, and Major Training’s comprehensive courses are designed to equip students with the skills and qualifications needed to excel in these industries.

“Reaching this milestone is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students, trainers, and the support from DESBT,” said Corey Bowles, General Manager of Major Training. “We are committed to providing top-notch training that exceeds industry standards and prepares our graduates for successful careers in their chosen fields.”

The “User Choice” funding from DESBT has been instrumental in making this program accessible to a diverse range of students, including school leavers, career changers, and those looking to upskill. By subsidising the cost of training, the program ensures that financial barriers do not prevent individuals from pursuing their career aspirations.

Students enrolled in the program benefit from a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical experience. Major Training’s modern facilities and industry-experienced instructors provide an immersive learning environment where students can develop hands-on skills. Additionally, the program’s strong connections with local employers facilitate valuable work placements, giving students a head start in the job market.

Jerry Gallagher, a recent graduate of an Electrotechnology course, shared his positive experience: “The training I received at Major Training was exceptional. The combination of classroom learning and real-world application gave me the confidence and skills to secure a great job in my field. I’m grateful for the opportunities this program has provided.”

Since 2005, the program’s impact has been profound, contributing to the growth and sustainability of Queensland’s key industries. By training a skilled workforce, Major Training and DESBT are not only helping individuals achieve their career goals but also supporting the state’s economic development.

As Major Training continues to expand and evolve its offerings, the future looks bright for both current and prospective students.

“We are dedicated to continuous improvement and innovation in our training programs,” added Corey Bowles. “With ongoing support from DESBT, we aim to train thousands more in a priority trade in the coming years, ensuring that Queensland remains a leader in these critical trades.”
