HiVis Women In Construction Update

We were excited to recently get out and make a site visit to chat to the women who are taking their careers into their own hands and completing our HiVis Women in Construction program, made possible by National Joblink.

The program kicked off on the 19th of June, and is a Community Work Skills initiative, with funding provided by the Queensland Government under their Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative. This is an essential training package to assist Queenslanders who meet the criteria to gain skills, qualifications and experience to enter or remain relevant in the workforce.

The motivated group of women are eager to progress into various fields upon completion and are thoroughly enjoying the practical elements they are undertaking.

We spoke to Maggie, who is interested in moving into the field of engineering.

“The course has been a great learning experience so far. It’s a good starting point for me to get an apprenticeship in engineering and as I would love to learn how to weld.” Maggie told us.

Deciding on a future in a different direction, was Sasha, who will pursue a career driving dump trucks.

“The course is great fun and filled with a lot of learning. The EWP (Elevating Work Platform) was higher than expected, but a lot of fun.” Sacha recalls.

The women have completed some exciting projects, including designing and constructing children’s outdoor play mud kitchens. A meaningful project which demonstrated design, critical thinking and problem solving. Enabling the students to experience the process from concept to creation and refine their technical skills. The finished kitchens were then graciously donated to a local Cairns Women’s and Children’s Centre to bring joy to others.

Another great community project completed by the girls was the facelift they gifted the local Barron Trinity Bulls Rugby Union Club. Brightening the clubhouse facilities with colorful murals and freshly painted amenities, the women were able to add painting and decorating experience to their repertoire.

As we continue to support and follow the women through the HiVis program, we would like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication we are seeing from this next future generation of skilled tradeswomen.
