Who is going to wire Australia’s clean energy future?

Australia has committed to net zero by 2050 and a 43% emissions reduction by 2030, but a commitment without the electricians to wire it is just a deadline on a page.

That commitment requires an enormous infrastructure transformation, with new transmission lines, solar installations, battery storage, EV charging networks and industrial electrification across every corner of the country.

Every one of those projects requires qualified electricians.

Jobs and Skills Australia estimate the clean energy sector will need 213,000 additional electricians by 2033, leading to a 30% workforce increase.

Australia currently employs around 191,000 electricians and the occupation is already in national shortage, a gap set to deepen as Jobs and Skills Australia projects the electrician workforce will need to grow by 13% by 2034, with 24,220 additional roles needing to be filled.

Australia needs to act now to build the electrician workforce the country’s future demands.

Commencements in the Certificate III in Electrotechnology have risen 61% over the past decade, making it the most commenced trade qualification in Australia, yet completion rates tell a very different story, with MEGT’s Productivity Prospectus report finding that apprentices who began their electrotechnology training and left before finishing surged by 80%.

The right training provider makes a measurable difference to whether an apprentice finishes.

Major Training delivers the Certificate III in Electrotechnology (UEE30820) through intensive two-week in-person training blocks, structured around the demands of full-time employment.

Apprentices train in real working environments, building hands-on competency without the disruption of prolonged time away from the job.

With Australia’s clean energy future underway, the people who complete their electrical training now will be among the most sought-after workers in the Australian labour market throughout their careers.

Major Training is here to qualify the next generation of tradespeople who will wire the homes, connect the grids and power the clean energy future this country has committed to.
