Breaking Barriers: Women in Construction Program Launching in 2025

The construction industry is evolving, and women are at the forefront of this transformation. Community Solutions and RoadTek, a branch of the Department of Transport and Main Roads, are launching the Women in Construction (WiC) Program in March 2025 with training delivered by Major Training Group—an initiative designed to create pathways for women seeking a career in civil construction.

A Program Designed for You

The WiC Program is a full-time traineeship that offers participants the opportunity to earn a Certificate III in Civil Construction while gaining practical experience at one of RoadTek’s ten operational units across Queensland. This initiative directly addresses the gender imbalance in the industry, actively encouraging women of all ages and backgrounds to take part.

What You Can Expect

  • A full-time, paid traineeship leading to a Certificate III in Civil Construction.
  • A competitive hourly traineeship rate, so you can earn while you learn.
  • A three-week program in Brisbane, followed by on-the-job training at one of RoadTek’s locations.

Who Should Apply?

The WiC Program is designed for both mature and junior female candidates who are eager to enter the civil construction industry. Whether you have prior experience or simply a strong passion for the field, we encourage you to apply.

Ideal candidates:

  • Are committed to completing a Certificate III in Civil Construction.
  • Have some industry knowledge or a keen interest in construction.
  • Can adapt to rotating shift work, including regional or night work.
  • Have dependents or pre-existing commitments? No problem! We welcome diverse applicants.
  • Must be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or an Australian permanent resident.
  • 2024 school leavers are highly encouraged to apply!

Hands-On Experience & Key Skills You’ll Develop

As a trainee, you’ll gain essential skills, including:

  • Reading and interpreting plans and implementing them as directed.
  • Carrying out measurements and calculations.
  • Maintaining and repairing road infrastructure.
  • Operating small plant and equipment.
  • Implementing traffic management plans.
  • Working outdoors in various conditions, day and night.

What You Need to Apply

  • Construction White Card.
  • Manual driver’s license (or willingness to obtain within six months).
  • CPR certification (desirable but not mandatory).
  • Ability to provide two work or school references.
  • Must pass a pre-employment medical and drug/alcohol testing.
