Participant Spotlight – Melinda Browne.

A pivotal SQW partnership program we have forged has been with Kingston East Neighbourhood Group (KENG), offering a Certificate III in Individual Support (CHC33015). A successful graduate of one of these cohorts was Melinda Browne. Prior to arriving at KENG, Melinda was struggling with mental health issues, low finances and low self-esteem. She had been living in her car for 8 months and as a single mother did not have full time access to her children as she did not have a place to live. KENG provided Melinda with access to immediate resources and offered her a hand up into a career of Individual Support by accessing SQW funding for her studies. Upon graduation, her hard work and perseverance paid off when she secured full time employment as a support worker. She is very proud of the fact that this is the first time in her life that she is working full-time. She was able to secure a home of her own and able to see her children more often. Melinda was also nominated as vocational trainee of the year in the Queensland Training Awards and is one of three finalists in her category.

“I didn’t think I could do it, but all the support is there. It changed my whole life,” Melinda shared with us during her graduation ceremony.
