How To Become a Dump Truck Driver

What does a Dump Driver do? 

A normal day in the life of a Dump Truck Driver can involve working a 12-hour shift, that’s often on a rotation roster. Drivers work on a range of sites including:

The day begins with picking up large loads from one location and navigating to the end location, where you will them empty the contents on the Dump Truck.

The cargo collected can include:

  • Sand
  • Construction Rubble

  • Minerals
  • Rock

Depending on the specific job requirements, Dump Truck Drivers can sometimes also be responsible for the cleaning and maintenance of the Truck.  

What qualifications are needed to become a Dump Truck Driver?

To drive a Dump Truck in Australia you will need to earn The Conduct Rigid Haul Truck Operations (RIIMPO338E) ticket. This ticket is a nationally recognised certificate, so you can work anywhere across Australia. 

Major Training offers this as a once off three day course, or as a unit of competency from the Certificate III in Civil Construction (Plant Operations RII30815).

To become a Dump Truck driver, it is also required that you complete a White Card. A white card is mandatory for all construction and building site visitors and employees. Major Training Group offer this nationally recognised qualification that will get you work-site ready. 

This is the general qualifications need to become. Dump truck driver but different companies, especially the mines, may have more site-specific requirements. Some of these could include:

  • A C-class licence
  • Pre-employment medical 
  • Police clearance check

The cost of this three-day course is $2,835, which includes all learning and assessment resources, access to the machinery and entry into the facility.

According to Talent.com the average salary for Dump Truck Drivers in Australia in 2022 is $92,528. Entry level positions start at $84,825 per year and experience workers can earn anything up to $103,350.
